My grandmother was 4'10" and my grandfather was 5'2". My dad ended up 5'6" and his brothers were a staggering (for my family) 5'10". Don't know how that happened.

Nonono. I may not be certified yet, but I lived in Detroit for years. Pimps walk. It's a punctuated, syncopated rocking bounce. Stroll is way too even and unsnazzy to describe a pimp in motion.

ChiKat, were your grandparents likely to have been malnourished (or even just underfed) as children? I know in Greece all the old ladies are 5 feet tall, and all the grandsons are 5'10". Because when the old ladies were young, everyone was really poor and hungry a lot. So maybe your grandparents had tallish genes that never got a chance.

It's the ungainly tallness, rather than the neck thing, that I was getting at. I'm really not used to being the tallest person in the room, so when I was, I felt like I'd been sucked through a black hole and was some incredible noodly elongated person.

No. They weren't wealthy, but they were strongly middle class. My grandfather had 3 brothers and they were all 5'1" to 5'3". And built like trucks, square and solid.

My grandmother had 2 sisters that I knew and one was around 5'0" but the other was more like 5'4". Maybe there were some hidden taller genes on her side.

Conversely, my mom's parents were 6'1" and 5'9" and my mom is only 5'2". Her sisters were all tall, though.
