Re: TV and kids under two, I think physically they are concerned about lack of activity and sedentarism, and psychologically about attention span and behaviour problems. I've seen studies about the latter specifically addressing the under-2 demographic, but am only guessing about the former based on what you see them saying about older kids and TV.

Bleah. I feel like shit. Just got back from an errands and snacking run, and in the elevator on the way back up there was a tired, irritable-looking woman with a toddler in tow. He was obviously restless, over-energized and discontented, toddling around the elevator and getting in everyone's way. At my floor he started heading out the door, and his mom hissed "Don't block the door!" and pulled him back by his hair. And then the door shut and they whisked away before I could force my brain to override the "be polite, don't interfere with other people's parenting, don't start fights" instinct and tear her a new one.
Fucking cow. And now I'm sitting here feeling all grouchy and queasy and vengeful and like a kid-betraying pussy.
At least there were a good half-dozen other people still in the elevator, including at least one doctor. I hope to God someone reamed her out but good once the door shut. I can't believe I didn't get my mouth in gear and say something. Fuck.

Yeah, if you're going to call the telescope a tool, then the printing press ought to be on there. It also seems to me that having both the knife and the sword on the list is akin to having a hammer and a bigger hammer as separate tools.
