You just have to know the person asking the question to know what the "right" answer is.
Oh, I do mean it's not the right answer for this organisation. It was precisely the right answer at my last job (not that that's a healthy example).
I just saw this article about a high school student that didn't realise she was pregnant until she went into labour. But it's not your typical story -- she gave birth right after a basketball game in which she scored 6 points on two three pointers.
It made me think of a conversation I just had with a mother at krav (her 16 year old daughter is now training to be an instructor). She was explaining how one of her tests was extra hard because she was 5 months pregnant. In fact, she trained until she was 7 months pregnant (and then came back to class not too long after the birth with her husband in tow, baby in his arms).
I expressed surprise, and an instructor, also a mother said she'd totally have done the same thing, had she been doing krav before becoming pregnant with her son.
Huh. Very huh. But these are my role models.
The funny part is that in 5 years, this place may be shrunk down to under 50 employees, working in a trailer not much bigger than the generator complex. OK, that last part is an exaggeration. We might get a couple large computer rooms across the street.

Luckily, the career advancement thing isn't seen as such a priority here because we're a small company. Although I technically take instructions from various editors on each project, there are really only two positions in between me and the company's owners, and I'd neither be qualified for one of them in the event of a vacancy nor willing to take on that much responsibility.

Every year during my review I get grief for not "growing". Why is being satisfied with your current position not acceptable? Especially since most of the people I've worked with have grown themselves right out of the company. No PC tech at our location has moved on to better positions in our company, they've all move on to better positions at a different company.
It almost sounds like they want to keep your self-esteem down so you won't get the idea to leave....

Well, if they want my self-esteem down, they've succeeded in this move to help desk with the re-org. Though it's making me consider doing the latter for the first time in the nearly 9 years I've been here, so I doubt that was their intention.

If where I worked had any real interest in advanceing me - or anyone else in my position- that would be cool. But they don't. they made a new position- library assistant - so we could be on the public floor. There are a whole bunch of things that we could do to ease the burdens of the librarians, but we can't do any of it- except on the sly. So when it is quiet, we fold things to be mailed. or count things. Pages and volunteers do those sort of things. for a lot less money. I am somewhat bitter, because I was promised more. however, I never take my job home wioth me, I like the work( when I am not bored) , and the money is very good comparred to the stress level.
