Dawn: I thought you were adequate. Giles: And the accolades keep pouring in. I'd best take my leave before my head swells any larger. Good night.

Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

As the mother of a daughter who loves books with action, and has a hard time finding girls starring in the above, thus leading to the time-honored tradition of "George is a girl in this one" (hey, I have books where you can see where I altered the genders to my liking as a kid), I approve of the changes in the book.

(I didn't actually WANT her reading Curious George, as I have Issues with the colonialist aspect of it, but she inherited a bunch of them.)

Good Trouble and Righteous Fights

Annabel bends the genders all on her own--at least, when she plays with her castle and all the toy horses she's named after herself and her classmates, Annabel-Horse gets to be the king. The first time I saw her do this, I said something about how a queen is a girl king, but she said, no, Annabel was the king, and I decided that was just fine.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I approve of the changes in the book.

Oh, yeah, some of them are fine. Some of them are just weird, though.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

The yellow ribbons are my favorite.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Two of my favorites as a kid were Tell Me a Mitzi and One Morning in Maine. The pictures in Tell Me a Mitzi are great, too -- really colorful and detailed. Strega Nona was another favorite.

For chapter books, I second the recommendation for Amelia Bedelia. Maybe also Winnie the Pooh?

information libertarian

Casper is soon to be 5, and didn't really take to chapter books until this spring (though as with so many things, I think this is a big YKMV issue). They are still a little hit or miss. She really likes action and almost-scary ones. We just read Roald Dahl's BFG, which she LOVED, and have also read Danny the Champion of the World (that was one of the first chapter books we read) and Charlie and the Chocolate factory. She also LOVED The Spiderwick Chronicles, which are really pitched more at 8-10 year olds IMO. But she asks to reread these; we had to buy them. Other starter chapter books are the Ramona books, and I know a lot of kids who have loved the Magic Treehouse series (which Susan as a history buff will approve of) but Casper is a little hit or miss on those.

Dillo is currently in love with Knuffle Bunny, Ten Little Ladybugs (he loves ladybugs!) and Cars and Trucks and Things That Go (our copy in inscribed to my brother, when HE was 2!)

“Not dead yet!”

Ooh, kids books! Love kids books.

Has anyone mentioned the Doreen Cronin/Betsy Lewin books?

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type

Giggle, Giggle, Quack

Duck For President

These are the first three they did together and all are delightfully anarchistic.
