Casper is soon to be 5, and didn't really take to chapter books until this spring (though as with so many things, I think this is a big YKMV issue). They are still a little hit or miss. She really likes action and almost-scary ones. We just read Roald Dahl's BFG, which she LOVED, and have also read Danny the Champion of the World (that was one of the first chapter books we read) and Charlie and the Chocolate factory. She also LOVED The Spiderwick Chronicles, which are really pitched more at 8-10 year olds IMO. But she asks to reread these; we had to buy them. Other starter chapter books are the Ramona books, and I know a lot of kids who have loved the Magic Treehouse series (which Susan as a history buff will approve of) but Casper is a little hit or miss on those.
Dillo is currently in love with Knuffle Bunny, Ten Little Ladybugs (he loves ladybugs!) and Cars and Trucks and Things That Go (our copy in inscribed to my brother, when HE was 2!)

Anyone remember a series of kids books about a girl named Betsy? I read them when I was in third grade or so, but they were already kind of easy for me at that point, so I think they're aimed a little younger. She had a little sister named Star, named that because she was born on Christmas. I'm pretty sure the books were from the fifties or earlier, but not much earlier than the thirties or so.
