inspirational, but also, the dude is a little nuts. I mean, I think it's irresponsible to marry and have a child if you live like that.
That's an unfortunate juxtaposition with talking about Hec and his book....
There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

In many ways Smay’s book is actually a better study of Waits’ music and life than the few recent (and much longer) biographies. The major elements of Waits’ music, and how many of those elements originated with Swordfishtrombones, are all addressed with a mixture of well-researched information and hilarious anecdotes and interpretations.
Oh, wow. That's an absolutely fantastic review. Bravo! And congratulations, Hecubus! We knew you when!
That is a wonderful review.

So glad that wasn't just me.
Hee, Steph! Well, book-writers can marry and have kids, I guess...
There's a scene where Paul Farmer stops to visit his wife and daughter (who is like, 3) in Paris for 12 hours on his way to Russia, and he hasn't seen them in 2 months, and he basically doesn't live with them or in fact anywhere, and as the parent of young children I just can't imagine choosing to live that way. For the child's sake. If I were that committed to saving the world, I wouldn't have kids.

Paul Farmer, not Hecubus, I assume. *g*
And yeah, that seemed clear. But then again, I think you kind of have to be, to do what he's done. I agree that he's probably not the best father on the planet, and his children are going to have some serious issues of living up to Dad's legacy. And yet, so many lives he's saved.
I think my brother did some work with Partners--at the least, one of his email addresses is a Partners addresss, and he did do some international public health work in Africa at one point...

Don't rush to judgment about Hec...
Sorry, I responded to Suela before going back to read the review. Two *entirely* separate topics.
Swordfishtrombones, reviewed: [link].
Thanks for linking that, Cor. The reviews have all been good but very sparse on the ground. It was disheartening to see that my book is selling just a notch above the one on Throbbing Gristle. No slight to the TG book, but I just gotta figure there are more Tom Waits fans in the world.
I'm sure that's because of cumulative sales. I mean, your book did just come out.
