I read a ton of Donaldson back in high school, when there was actually not that much FSF to read. Don't read it: the hero is a rapist (this is not a spoiler, he does it almost first thing). The narrative is nihilistic and there's nobody to root for. I have no recollection if the writing itself is any good, but there are far more cheerful things to read nowadays.

You reminded me of how I used to enjoy Piers Anthony. (I feel like I miss problem stuff quite a bit, so 20 years ago or so when I first realized that Anthony was Problematic, I was even more clueless. And yet recognized he had ISSUES). I don’t think I even want to know how troubling things got. I enjoyed one or two of his series but doubt I can reread them now. And even then remember the Xanth series as like “wait, what the…”
