Oh man, I've been meaning to read the Discworld books, too. I keep forgetting.
I am a MASSIVE proponent of starting with the Witches timeline (as laid out on this guide:

Granny Weatherwax is one of the greatest characters ever created, and the Tiffany Aching books at the end are some of my all-time favorite, most utterly fun and charming books ever. Plus, wee, foul-mouthed blue Scots-like pixies (Nac Mac Feegles, the Wee Free Men) who enjoy beating the crap out of everyone. Plus, plus, Tiffany Aching, one of the best heroines ever.
Seriously. I'm getting weepy thinking about them being over.
I will admit that they kind of spoiled me for a lot of the other Discworld books, which I enjoy, but just can't measure up. Not a fan of Guards, Guards, though I also love the Death series.
Heh. I conned my book group into reading Pratchett's Equal Rites this month. We've been on a literary kick of late, which is all well and good. But it's time for some footnotes and puns. And characters about whom I actually give a toss.
Pix is me. Witches all the way down.
> Plus, plus, Tiffany Aching, one of the best heroines ever.
THIS IS ABSOLUTE TRUTH.

Ok, I don't know whether to put this in Lit, Music, or F2F... because Sheryl's Gary just made the most amazing thing and sang it at Balticon, so I'm putting it here because it's book related: [link] (and awesome)
That was brilliant! Well done, Gary.
I have been humming that all morning.
You can't go wrong if you start at either of Guards! Guards! or Equal Rites. The early Rincewind books aren't as good. The Death books are wonderful, but are probably best read after at least some background from some of the others. Same for the industrials (I use a lot of quotes about the guild of Alchemists on my students).
Gris, try Kate Elliott. She has 3 complete fantasy series, and 2 under way. All very good.
I have come to realize I'm not a huge fan of the Discworld series. I like the first one. But Id idn't like Equal Rites that much or the one with Death. I think it was the first one. But I wasn't reading them in a proper order.
mostly the writing style became too much about half way through.
Still thinking Vorkosigans, and at one point in the last couple of weeks, I went looking for Taura fan art to no avail. So I don't know what this is actually about, but I like it for Taura! [link]
Also, there's a guy who I see on my commute some days who could be the physical model for Miles, and I can't decide if I hope he does or doesn't know about the series.
