Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

Always Anti-fascist!

I was quite a big fan for a while, Ginger.(have sort of lost touch with her work in recent years)

brillig

One of today's BookBub offerings is an omnibus of the first three Lord Peter Wimsey novels for $1.99. I have the first two, but these editions look a little cleaner, plus the third one isn't in public domain yet.

Woe to the fucking wicked.

I don't know if we have any other A Song of Ice and Fire readers around, but I just started a re-read group on FB (I'm 76 pages in, and am about to take a break and read Dunk & Egg so Sean and Hil can catch up). If you're interested in playing (or just watching), let me know, or ask to be added to "Foreshadowing, Ho! (A Song of Ice and Fire re-read)"

Punishingly Intricate

Hey! Can I get book recs for someone (me!) who loved Wolf Hall, and its sequel, and really wishes the 3rd book was out so I could read it this weekend?

Dorothy Dunnett? Just as dense, and well characterized, but the prose style is very different.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

I haven't read any Hillary Mantel, but she does have a new book of short stories out.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

The Book Smugglers invited to join Smugglivus this year, so behold, my Best Reads of 2014.

If I had finished The Martian in time, it would be on that list because holy shit.

What is Smugglivus?

I really enjoyed The Martian. It reminded me of Apollo 13, and also Jurassic Park, because it was so obviously meant to be a movie. I bought a copy for my brother, and will get another for my Dad.
