If I have not yet read The Book Thief (I know, I know), would it be a mistake to see the movie first?
Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.
There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."
Oh, false alarm -- it's only playing at 9:30pm, way too late for me. OK, next question: Which movie should I see, American Hustle or 12 Years a Slave ? I will also be seeing Inside Llewyn Davis on the same day, if that makes a difference. (Movie Day!)

I always think it's better to see the movie first, because the book is probably better, and that way you won't be disappointed.
12 Years a Slave. Do not see Book Thief before you read it. Also, I have heard American Hustle is no good.
I have heard the opposite re: American Hustle. Every report I've seen is very positive.
What PC said. Also, I saw American Hustle and absolutely loved it.
I've heard nothing but goods stuff about American Hustle. (We also saw a preview for Inside Llewyn Davis last night, and it looks really good.)
Is The Book Thief out already? I thought I had a little while (I'm still reading -- I had to take a break from WWII for a little while).
The take on American Hustle that my friends have had was that it went nowhere, that the cast was wasted on a meandering and nothing story.
These are my same set of friends who thought that Black Swan was laughably bad, which when I finally saw it, I had to agree.
My father-in-law was an extra in American Hustle, and it was filmed in Worcester, so we'll definitely be seeing it.
