Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

thanks for the image.

Heh--you're welcome.

all the ick that is Richard.

Yeah. I thought the character has some promise when introduced--his issues played nicely against Anita's. But LKH hasn't had any idea of what to do with him for years.

If budget was no object I think I'd have him played by Hugh Jackman. Then if he's scripted close to the source (ugh) at least my eyes would have fun.

Herding cats for fun

I agree, Richard started out promising. Then he devolved into stomping around complaining all the time. He was a pain because he couldn't accept what he was, or Anita either. Too much like Riley Finn for my taste.

oh joy! Oh Rapture ! I have a brain!

I think that is what I most dislike about LKH. What she did to Richard. I can't accept that he can be Alpha Male and dislike what he is . that makes no sense. I liked him. but he is such a whiner now. and our friend the vampire was definatly sexier , but since group sex is all the rage and everyone must have sex and don't forget sex magic.. his appeal is gone.

oh joy! Oh Rapture ! I have a brain!

but Anita only has sex with men , right - I can't really remember. so I guess there is one taboo out there.

Always Anti-fascist!

She harps on that so much it seems kind of self-loathing to me and I'm just a Kinsey 1.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

and our friend the vampire was definatly sexier , but since group sex is all the rage and everyone must have sex and don't forget sex magic.. his appeal is gone.

For me, his appeal vanished about the fifteenth time he popped out of the shadows to reiterate to Anita that she was his Human Servant in the introductory novel. The term eventually grew as meaningless as endless repitition from the mouths of politicians made "stay the course."

Also, I wanna know what LKH's obsession with men in french braids is. I mean, I can go along with the men-with-long-hair thing, though it's not my thing. But...french braids?? I don't think I've ever seen a man with a french braid. I would quite possibly point and laugh. And she has guys wearing them ALL THE TIME.

(Edit: She's also always, when they're wearing the french braid, saying it makes them LOOK like they have short hair, which....no. I am currently wearing a french braid. I do not look like I have short hair, I just look like my long hair is pulled back. BZZT! Try again!)

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I don't think I've ever seen a man with a french braid.

Sure you did. At the RenFaire. Remember the big hair braiding booth? Also I've seen a picture of ND with a french braid in his (then long) hair.

Though this is besides the point. And who am I to quibble about somebody else's hair obsession?

That man was going to shank me. Over an omelette. Two eggs and a slice of government cheese. Is that what my life is worth?

LKH's obsession with men in french braids

I've never read her stuff, but had considered reading some of the early stuff. Now? NSM.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I don't think I've ever seen a man with a french braid.

Maybe not a white guy, but I bet you've seen a picture of a rapper, say, with them.
