Sounds like he wants to interact anonymously because he wants the ego boost when someone recognizes him. And he can be the Humble Professional Writer. Or whatever.
I have a feeling it plays out in his head. He'll be anonymously walking around Worldcon and get in a discussion with someone. And then he'll see the comprehension move across her face like the sun at dawn. She bites her lip, unsure how to continued, does she acknowledge this Great Writer in her presence? Does pretend he's just someone Humble?
So he smiles, benevolently, letting her know that he knows that she knows. And that it's okay. She can acknowledge him. The woman's hand flies to her face as she gasps, and then she steels herself. "Oh! You're (whatever his name is)! You wrote WOOL! I can't believe I didn't recongize you sooner. I'm sure you get recognized all the time! Wool is just... it was a life changer. And your personal story. Going from self publishing to having the film rights of your story sold. You must be ....It must be amazing for you. Please, impart your wisdom to me about self publishing and life."
And so the Humble Writer, humbled at being recognized with no name tag or announmencet of who is imparts his wisdom on to this woman knowing that this will be one of those stories she tells and retells of when she met a Great Writer Who was Humble.
Oh! You're (whatever his name is)!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA, perfect.
That was BRILLIANT (apparently all the J's on the board are in strong agreement - I'm sure juliana will be around any minute now to concur).
I couldn't be bothered to scroll back and look for his name.
I found his blog but I didn't bother to read his version. From what everyone has said here it sounds like some kind of passive aggressive bs from someone who really wants to be well known.
I bet his a name dropper too.
An S on the board agrees too. Beautifully wrought, Askye.
The comments section is getting thick with writer and editor disapprobation. Including this one:

Setting aside your mode of discourse (which is rank) it strikes me that harboring such anger toward an anonymous woman in a line at an sf con who was vocally opinionated (this by the by, is the definition of an sf/f fan) and whose opinion ran counter to yours, for NINE MONTHS says a lot more about you than you might have wanted to reveal. I’ve been curious to meet you, for professional ressons. No more.
I admit I didn't read that carefully, but this was nine months ago? I guess Worldcons are usually in August.
And he JUST posted about this?
He posted it now because it was his dream to win a Hugo for
Wool
and be all, "Fuck you, bitch!" in his speech, but now that can't happen, so here's a blog post instead.
Man, I've been skipping and skimming and didn't realize that the ass you guys were talking about was the author of Wool. Sad now.
I loved askye's interpretation of events. I'm sure that is exactly what was going on!
Which I think means he wants to be Humble But Noticed so he can Thrill some Fan (and broaden her mind)
But more importantly,
he
can have that story to tell over and over. But it's not a story that he's telling to brag (in his braggart little mind), no, he's telling it humbly. At cocktail parties or dinner parties or when he's out with friends. It's the The Time at Worldcon, I was Anonymous Among the Unwashed Masses, and a Fan Recognized Me and it Made her Worldcon Experience. I'm Sure She Still Tells this Story To this Day!
And he has little hearts drawn all around it.
Only she didn't play her part and meanly trampled on his attempts to be The Humble Hugo Nominated Author Walking Anonymosly in WorldCon (THHNAWAW for short). She squashed that dream like she was wiping dog poop on the galley copy of his book when it was Officially Published.
And now. Now she has to PAY! And he's going to do it publicly.
Which of course totally backfired on him.
