Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

I have a question for the Buffistas. These are the choices my cousin has for his summer reading list. He is going to be a senior in high school, probably an average reader but I don't think he really likes to read. which book would you recommend? I haven't read any of them, but I was leaning toward telling him Herietta Lacks.

1. The Winter of Disconnect by Susan Maushart.

2. Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

3. Feed by M.T. Anderson

4. Brave New World by: Aldous Huxley

5. The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson

6. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Great book. Everyone should read it!

Because books.

I might vote for Feed by M.T. Anderson for him.

"I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret." Leigh Bardugo

Great book. Everyone should read it!

TOTALLY Agree. I'm considering teaching it to my regular classes.

But Feed is an easier (and interestingly thought provoking yet irritating read). I hated the voice in Feed but it was good.

Have him read a chapter in each.

oh joy! Oh Rapture ! I have a brain!

3 , 4, and 5 are good. 3 is probbably the best choice, I really loved 5 and 4 will be more useful or school career -- and good

Our wings are not tired.

For a senior in HS? Brave New World.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I suspect most of us in this thread were That Kid who read ALL the summer reading books...or never got around to them because we were so busy reading other things.

Art Crawl!!!

I think having him dip into each and making a decision based on that is probably the best option.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

Yeah, I definitely read All The Books. It was kinda ridiculous. I won all the summer reading contests. I earned all the reading incentive prizes. And mostly I was just happy because they brought me truckloads of moar books.
