In a mystery series, though, the protagonists are going to grow and change as the books progress, and part of the lure for me is always seeing their lives as "real people" outside of the job.
Then again, sex scenes don't bother me unless they're completely gratuitous and pointless. And even then, if they're super hot, whoo.
Yeah, I am not saying he shouldn't write them or that you guys shouldn't enjoy them. Just that I don't.
And also object to the term bodice-ripper as hopelessly outdated.
I didn't know people actually used that term unless they were trying to insult a book and/or genre.
Breaking Dawn is...well, it's icky. And I read books with dismemberments.
As always, I love erika.
I'm with you, javachick. I'm usually thinking, somewhat literally, "Come on, come on. Get back to the story."
Tep, thanks, but I'm hard to gross out...that one did it. But I was twisted enough to drink a Slurpee during some of the parts.
Then, it pissed me off...love-struck, starry-eyed teens don't need to be exposed to that much of Steph Meyer's psyche...it ain't right. That was all Too Much for me, and I've been in therapy...I know what metaphors are and how to approach media with a critical eye and what-have-you.
javachik, I'm sorry if I made it sound like I was trying to convince you, everyone is looking for something different in a book.
I know the time has passed, but I hate the word "fanficcer". Or lack of a word.
totally, Dana.
I wish George pelecanos wrote better sex scenes, since he always includes one and he's my favorite crime writer. But they are not that good, and he always uses the word "sex" to refer to a woman's anatomy and it's a little weird.
I'm usually thinking, somewhat literally, "Come on, come on. Get back to the story."
I'm usually thinking
"Y'know, for sex with vampires"
(or werewolves, ghosts, demons, supernatural and/or preternatural being of your choice)
"this is really boring."
IIRC, there's not terribly much sex in Outlander (the first book--and by that I mean maybe 5 sex scenes...over 600 pages) and it's...kinda plot-relevant at points. But in the later books, yeah, I tend to be going "yeah yeah everyone is hot for each other we get it already"
