I haven't watched enough vids to have especoially strong critical opinions. I know there's a Connor vid set to the Dixie Chicks song "Godspeed" that always makes me cry. And the "Closer" vid is wonderful.

This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.
I still want a Harmony-centric vid done to Voltaire's When You're Evil.
I just bumped into an LJ entry by LauraShapiro that's really detailed and kinda offputting about vids.
Not saying she's wrong -- it's obviously hard and there's a lot of stuff going on in creation I couldn't even dream of understanding.
But DAMN. She has a high bar.
Which might just explain the quality of her work.

Exactly. On both counts.
Which might just explain the quality of her work.
Well, yeah. She's among the very best around. And hanging out with her has, frankly, spoiled me for a lot of vids.
Vids are like fic, like writing, like almost any artistic endeavor; and Sturgeon's Law applies. But it took a while for me to begin to develop the tools to evaluate them.
Thank you Katie -- these are just amazing.
Thanks for the rec, Katie. Those are lovely.
Is anyone else rapidly becoming annoyed with the "...and then an army of Slayers shows up and saves the day!" ending to post-"Not Fade Away" fics? I understand why people want to see it, but on the asspull scale it's up there with having all the demons suddenly discover they're allergic to water.
I don't think it's an asspull (seeing as they've had contact with those people as recently as a couple episodes ago).
I think it's cheap, and really misses the point, though.
To me, it's an asspull because we got no indication that a)the MoG even thought about contacting the Slayers or b)that the Slayers would gather in L.A. to help Angel. I think it would be possible to make it believable, but I'd want to see more groundwork for it, not just them suddenly being there.

This I absolutely agree with you about. I think part of what bugs me is it makes the ending of Angel All About Buffy, and that's *wrong.*
