To me, it's an asspull because we got no indication that a)the MoG even thought about contacting the Slayers or b)that the Slayers would gather in L.A. to help Angel. I think it would be possible to make it believable, but I'd want to see more groundwork for it, not just them suddenly being there.
I think it's cheap, and really misses the point, though.
This I absolutely agree with you about. I think part of what bugs me is it makes the ending of Angel All About Buffy, and that's *wrong.*
I don't have the link handy, but one fic I read has Angel leading everyone into the Hyperion, waiting for all the demons to follow, then escaping through the sewers where the detonator for the hotel-full of explosives is waiting.

I think I saw that! Yeah, that was a good one.
There was a line in it about Angel saying good-bye to the hotel that made me choke up.
The idea that Buffy et al are reciprocating surveillance after Angel's hissy fit in Italy wouldn't surprise me in the least. But there'd have to be a good and powerful (hopefully non-schmoopy) payoff.
Andrew coming in to save the day because Buffy's busy elsewhere. That would be humliating for the MoG.

Kind of the flip of Lorne killing Lindsey. "You don't save me! Buffy saves me!"
Where's the best place to find post-Angel stories?
I've seen a few on LJ (including the wonderful ones Katie rec'ced), but I'd like to track down the one Connie mentioned, for starters...
Someone's been collecting links...aha, found it. Doyle. Looks like a mix of fic and posts about the finale, but you might find some stuff there.
Let me see if I can find the link. It was on LJ. There's some stuff on a site called All About Spike (allaboutspike.com), which has an obvious bias ;)
Here we go. It's called "Exit, Stage Left"
