Fan Fiction: Writers, Readers, and Enablers
This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.
If it's non-romantic stuff you're after, Rheanna writes excellent
Angel
stories that read like episodes, and Yahtzee has some cracking stuff, some BtVS and some AtS.
Phoenix Burning
is a classic, written after the end of Season 5 and working on the supposition that Buffy doesn't get brought back to life until far into the future. (B/A, but it's far more plotty than shippy.)
Rhymes with Gleaming is a lovely take on Spike's siring (a little slashy) and After The Fall is a cracking series of stories set post
-The Gift.
Min has a fondness for Buffy/Wesley and for less than cheerful takes on the Jossverse.
Ink is tiny, but it's one of my favourite pieces of Willowcentric fiction.
Winnow- het only, or will you read slash?
Edit: I ask, because I started to rec stuff, and then wondered if what I like to read would actually be to your taste.
And, if you're well-disposed to m/m,
Herself's
Manhattan Nocturne is very, very hard to beat. Spike and Dru in New York in the 1920s. NC17.
Actually what am I
saying?
Go here for Buffista Recs.

Hey! I have some cheerful ones, missy! (And a vast assortment of pairings, het, slash, etc. And one songfic. Hee.)
[link] is the better link, though.
Ooh, all fantastic! Thanks for all the great links. Slash is totally fine with me.
"Manhattan Nocturne" is one of those stories where, knowing the history books she's read, I can say, oh, that bit comes from George Chauncey, and that bit.... It's a major distraction to have research not feel, well, digested for me.
I keep trying to get Yahtzee to post the original first chapter of Phoenix Burning to her LJ. And to write the SV stories she's told me she has in her head. Gah.
If you're ok with slash, Kita's Slashing the Angel archive has a really good selection of, well, Angel slash. It's at [link] somewhere. And, oh, Lar's eterniata archive, which sadly I no longer even know the URL for was at one point *the* best place to find good Buffyverse fic. I don't know how actively it's being updated now, though.

Wrod. Oh, Jeez - Kassie & Lar's highly improbable Xander/Lindsey Epic Trilogy was one of the first pieces of slash that I read, and it absolutely knocked my socks off. Don't know whether I'd be as impressed all these long months later, with so many more good stories read, but I really did adore it then.

I'm sorry to hear it. I haven't read any history books about NY myself - really, for all intents and purposes it might as well have been set on Mars. Exotic as you like. I just love it, but YSpikeStoryOfChoiceMV.
You should really read George Chauncey's
Gay New York,
which is one of Herself's major sources. It's a fun, well written book, a really eye-opening history of American gay culture, and for me, as a New Yorker, it's one of those books that made me look at my city in a whole new way.
The Xander/Lindsey epic was a lot of people's favorites when it was written. I liked it, but I really loved the unfinished vamp!Xander/Angel epic. I'm still heartbroken that they never finished it!
I can find the erentia nocturne archive, just let me look through my links.
Also I loved the Xander/Lindsey series except for the very last bit.
