Fan Fiction: Writers, Readers, and Enablers
This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.
Also, there are archives and recs sites. Lots of recs sites nowadays are just lists of links, rather than archives, because it's so easy to link to a story on an author's site or on an archive like BFA.
Back in the old days
t waves cane at Nutty
you generally notified/asked permission to put something on a rec site because it was also an archive.
I check my site stats regularly, and that's how I sometimes find out I've been recced by people. Or I google my ficposting name.
Got it. Thanks, everyone - I am extremely new at this.
I've got three of those.
Yeah, but you said everybody's got one. They don't. just a few of us.
Connie, where on earth do you live? I don't do swords anymore, or the normal 60-pound pull bow; even before the MS, plastic in wrists and fingers disallowed it. Still love knives, though.
Googling my fic name is fun. I found Te had made an exception to reccing WIPs to rec Career Change. I'm tempted to email her and point out that Chapter 4 is out.
Connie, where on earth do you live?
Utah. Hubby is a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and the neighborhood is used to the every-summer fighter practice in the front yard.
edit: You mean--not everyone has a crossbow in the house? Everyone I know does.
Well, since I write everything in one name, googling gets me all sorts of weird shite.
I've heard too many horror stories of people writing fic under their own name, and then realizing their intended career as a kindergarten teacher might be imperiled by the easily-found GVSP they posted on the net.
So, fic-pseud. Plus board-pseud. Plus AIM-pseud.
I'm all about the pseuds.
And damn, I have a meeting. This is the one day I am not allowed to slack off. If you see me on the board again, kick me.
Ha! I lurves me some SCA.
Consuela, I won't be here to kick you, because I can't slack off either.
Since I'm a writer by profession, I can't imagine what damage I can do to myself; if it sucks, then yes, I can dmage myself professionally. But since I don't publicly make available anything I wouldn't want the world to read, no matter the genre or source, I may as well keep it all under my own wing.
I suppose I'm a member too, though I don't do as much anymore. But I have stood on the frontlines of the battlefield as the opposing army charges in. Plus I killed the King, the Prince, and a whole bunch of knights. Good times.
In other fandoms, you happen upon the rec in the strangest places, unawares
Most of the time in popslash, you get recced without being told. You just happen upon it. I did once get a request for my It's a Wonderful Lance fic to be archived on a Freddie Mercury tribute site. I was quite surprised and rather amused. Also, you know, flattered.
