You know, I've saved lives. Dozens. Maybe hundreds. I reattached a girl's leg. Her whole leg. She named her hamster after me. I got a hamster. He drops a box of money, he gets a town.

Fan Fiction: Writers, Readers, and Enablers

This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Vonnie, I almost posted some other Stargate links in your LJ this morning, but they were slash. Regardless, Brighid writes some of the most fabulous stuff in any fandom, so I bet her Stargate is pretty nifty.

You sip / say it's your crazy / straw say it's you're crazy / as you bicycle your soul / with beauty in your basket

Whoa. Would this be the same Amperage as in Amperage and Livengoo who wrote in The X-Files way back when?

Oh! I've been looking for any websites of theirs. (Another reason it's cooler to have a name like HelenBecka than Amperage, as lovely a word as it is: I can goddamn google you for a website when I'm trying to write this woman's rec page.) Thank you.

S to the A -- using they/them pronouns!

Don't read Stargate, but Brighid, whose taste I trust, says that this is excellent.

Thanks, Dana.

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

Vonnie, I almost posted some other Stargate links in your LJ this morning, but they were slash.

See, it's not like I don't like romance in my fic - I do (although I almost always prefer UST to RST), but not all the time, and not when 'getting the characters together romantically' is the be-all and end-all of the fic. At this point, I feel like I've had enough of stories in which Mulder and Scully, Buffy and Spike, Jack and Daniel (and whatever other major pairing in a given fandom) realize their deep abiding love for each other, then celebrate their passion in the Most Fantastic Sex They've Ever Had. If Jack and Daniel undergo some interesting & harrowing ordeal during one of their missions, and through the hardship, come to realize the depth of their feelings - then that's great. Bring'em on.

Man, does that make me sound like Miss Prudence McPrudepants. Anyway, the overabundance of earthshattering sex in fic annoys me - it's one of the reason I couldn't finish Iolokus. And I get incredibly irritated when people say "why write or read fanfic at all, unless there's graphic sex in it?".

Bah. Who knows? Maybe it's because sometimes, it looks like everyone's having great sex but me. t /Clyde Bruckman

Eeeeee. I didn't mean to go off like that. Even with my weird attitude, I'd still read pretty much anything as long as it's well-written.

Oh! I've been looking for any websites of theirs.

RL, if you are looking for Amperage & Livengoo's XF-fic (most of which are insanely long), most of them are in The Gossamer Project. Just search under their respective pseuds.

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

FWIW, Vonnie, you are I are one on this issue. Romance in and of itself is not enough of a reason to read a story, for me. Even romance in addition to a plotty story doesn't always work, because as often as not the romance feels shoehorned in like a required improv element. It's nice when it does all work, but I'm just as happy with a romance-free plotty story.

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

Anyway, the overabundance of earthshattering sex in fic annoys me

I love finding average-to-mediocre in a story.

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

Wrod, Nutty. I'm another one who likes UST mixed in with the RST. I'm one who'll hold the banner high as a lover of gen. fic, especially for mystery/suspense shows like X-Files or CSI.

S to the A -- using they/them pronouns!

Dear god I love genfic. There's just not enough out there.

brillig

genfic=plot comes first, not the relationships? A good, chewy plot with maybe the slightest spice of UST or just an ongoing relationship in the background is nice.

There's often no mention of a relationship in true genfic. Like watching an episode, or something. Or them play in the park, with no overt sexual undertones.
