All right, no one's killing folk today, on account of our very tight schedule.

Buffista Movies 5: Development Hell

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Most watched in a theater in the pre-video era?

The Princess Bride for me hands down. In the 6-odd years I lived in Montreal I probably saw it on the big screen ten, twelve times.

it might have helped if you'd started as a pre-teen

Infant! Some of us were in university when it came out.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

I think I need to distinguish between movies I've rewatched for extra-meritorious reasons

David hits the nail on the head because I think My Neighbor Totoro is soaring to no. 1 based on the bits and pieces we watch with my son.

My list of movies I've chosen to watch over and over again would probably be:
The Big Lebowski
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
High Plains Drifter (which isn't really a good movie, but it's one that I will watch, for whatever reason, whenever it's on the tv)
Star Wars
The Wild Bunch
Miller's Crossing

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Alan Tudyk plus Tom and Zoe from Spooks.

And Rupert Graves! And Peter Dinklage!

Infant! Some of us were in university when it came out.

Sorry. (not really)

When we went to see 28 Week Later last night, there was a queue to be let into the screen showing Waitress. Interesting, given this is the only place I've seen mention of it.

Compassionately intolerant

Impromptu

Oy yes! I've seen this one many times too.

Heathers

I bought the sooperspecialanniversary edition because I remember loving this movie to bits. Saw it several times in my younger days. But watching it now ended up being painful. Perhaps it was my mindset in the moment, but it seemed so much more mean-spirited than I remembered. Must try again.

Speaking of Christian Slater (weren't we?) and most watched movies. Another that I must confess to seeing 6 times...in the theatre...in one week...is...wait for it...Untamed Heart.

I know, I know. But...but...I was going through a painful breakup and it was perfect for my mood.

And plus? Kyle Secor as a baddie, Rosie Perez ("I'd do 'im, but ooooh that hair") and the sweetest co-dependent ever, Marisa Tomei ("Magic records and a baboon heart. Now ya got me believin' it.") And, the extra added bonus of the best hockey-game kiss ever filmed.

I couldn't wait for the dvd. It's a guilty pleasure.

I feel so clean for having made a clean breast of my weakness.

You may mock, but don't be hatin'.

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

Harold and Maude/King of Hearts (they always played them together). Nobody even remembers King of Hearts anymore.

Hey now! I remember King of Hearts!!!

I haven't seen it in about 13 years, but I remember it!

It's been a bit since I rewatched anything but I'd say my most-rewatched with intent (Princess Bride might win for numbers, because there was a period where all my friends played it all the time at parties, so I saw it a LOT without voicing consent) are:

  • Harold and Maude
  • Rocky Horror (I was in the cast for the local theatre, so, you know)
  • Sleep With Me
  • Grosse Pointe Blank
  • Star Wars, original trilogy
  • Nothing Sacred
  • Orlando
  • Bring It On

I think it is rather more mean-spirited, or rather, I don't sympathize with JD or his romance with Veronica at all as an adult. I think of it more as a parable for Veronica becoming strong in a different way than JD or the Heathers. I mean, I see why Veronica Mars is named Veronica. Mostly, however, I watch it because I love the costumes.

I don't think I ever sympathised with JD. Loved the movie anyway, though.

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

Most watched list for me:

LotR (yeah, like that's a big surprise to y'all!)
Groundhog Day
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Aliens (my sister and I watched this tape weekly for about a year)
Star Wars trilogy (saw each of them three times apiece in their initial run, which wasn't surpassed until LotR)
Singin' in the Rain
Wizard of Oz
Adventures of Robin Hood (not to be missed in its annual showing on "Family Classics" on WGN)
Princess Bride

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

Grosse Pointe Blank

Oh, dude. I forgot about Cusack. Of course I watched Say Anything more often than My Brilliant Career.
