Buffista Movies 5: Development Hell

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I've been so busy at work today I didn't get a chance to mention that DH and I saw Thank You For Smoking last night (it comes out in April).

They've thrown away the book's plot almost entirely, but the tone is dead-on. The casting is pitch-perfect, and most of the dialogue is lifted straight out of the book. (With the exception of the ones written specially for Adam Brody, who is hysterically funny. He's got a line about syphilis that had me in tears. And one about sushi.)

It loses steam in the third act (see above, re: no real plot), but it's not a big deal since the film is only 90 minutes long.

The only major quibble I have with it is that for some reason, nobody is ever shown smoking onscreen, which is a pretty glaring omission considering the subject matter. There's a weird hypocrisy about it -- they'll let the characters say much more than they're willing to actually show.

Shit's all sorts of different now.

Am I totally late to the party that I just saw Brokeback Point Break trailer last night?

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe

Brokeback Mountain, the 30-second-animated-bunny version.

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

::catches up on thread::

::bursts into hysterical Brokeback flashback tears::

Fuck. Hec's never gonna be willing to see this movie with me.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

I love the bunny movie re-enactments with an unholy love.

I still haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, and now I"m pretty sure I wouldn't be able to see it for crying. I don't think I'm up to that much emotionally resonant pain.

Now tagless for your comfort.

I have a rock for a heart. I didn't cry at all. I felt for everybody, but...

I didn't cry until well after I got home. I think it was looking at my own kids and then remembering Jack's mother and the way she looked at Ennis and how sweet she was when she handed him the bag for the shirts. It struck me hard.

The bunnies have broken me as well.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Note to self: Ju-on not the ideal choice of movie to switch television to when trying to drift off to restful sleep.
