That article's been around a little while. But hating Network is a-ok with me. What a load of crazappy.
Buffista Movies 5: Development Hell
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I don't think Shawshank Redemption should be in there at all. Being on TNT a hundred times a year does not automatically make something a classic.
I agree, except it's also the only one on the list that, IMO, will truly bring down the wrath and shock of your peers if you admit you don't like it. Lots of people don't like Fantasia, and even more have never seen Network or Carrie. But admitting to disliking Shawshank is like admitting you kick puppies and then put their heads on spikes. (It's right up there with admitting you thought Bull Durham was a tiresome bore.)
I've always thought liking Shawshank was a guy thing. Because I don't get it.
I didn't think it really lived up to the hype, but it was all right.

Really? I don't think I know anyone with passionate feelings about Shawshank. I'm not passionate about disliking it. It's just there. Being ploddingly inspirational at me. It's a thing you watch sometimes on a Sunday afternoon when there's nothing else on.
I'd think Star Wars would be a bigger deal among my peers. I've never been more frightened for my life than after I saw the re-release.

I think it's one of those feel-good classics that people who aren't into movies actually buy. If I know someone who owns just a dozen or so movies, that is usually one of them. It's like Forrest Gump that way.
I love Forrest Gump, though.
I haven't seen Shawshank. I had no interest.
(It's right up there with admitting you thought Bull Durham was a tiresome bore.)
You know, Sports Movies with a Side of Romance are, like, my One True Movie style. My Desert Island Discs would include The Cutting Edge, Dodgeball, A Knight's Tale, and Men With Brooms. I can't help it. They stir something in me.
That said?
Bull Durham bored the crap out of me.
Though I do have a sick fondness for Tin Cup.
Gee, I really love Shawshank! That's one of my can't-click-past-it-on-TV movies, even though I own the anniversary DVD (the one with all the bells and whistles on it). I cry at the end of that movie almost every time, and think that Red's final voiceover monologue ("I hope the Pacific is as blue as it is in my dreams. I hope.") is one of the best last lines ever.
I love Forrest Gump, though.
I lot of people love it. I hate it with the passion of a thousand burning suns, but I actually really like Shawshank so what do I know?
