Saw Casino Royale.
Can I just say Whoa.
Pacing, casting, scenery, intensity, cleaving to the Fleming tone. Whoa.
I have only one quibble...
the denoument was way, way too long.
But other than that, Barbara Broccoli and her crew, get my vote for best revisioning of a franchise since...um, since anything ever on film.
Cubby must be proud, whereever he is...his daughter has totally shown him up.
I don't remember it being mentioned here, but I saw a very lovely Canadian film the other night called Wilby Wonderful, starring Paul Gross, Callum Keith Rennie, Sandra Oh, and a host of other Canadian actors. It's beautifully shot and a darkly funny "a day in the life of" film. Definitely worth the Netflix.
Wilby Wonderful is like Canadian Actor Fan Porn. A friend loaned it to me in college and while I was interested in the quirky plot and did enjoy it, I was more psyched for seeing all these Canadian actors I slavishly adore on the same screen.
beej, that's good to know; Casino Royale was always my favorite Bond book. Maybe I can convince my dad to go to it this weekend.
Sail, Fela had no interest in seeing CR, which is saying something, considering he sees most everything. He'd been so ground down by the cheese, improbability and general silliness that the Bond franchise had become.
None. Of. That. Here.
Fela ended up loving it and thanked me several times for convincing him to go.
Be aware that it is super violent...made even more jarring if you've seen the previous Bonds. There is also a scene of
torture,
that one line stander told me he was worried about before we got into the theatre. It was unpleasant, to be sure, but there is ONE aspect of it that mediates the violence. I'm sure you'll know immediately what I mean.
I've heard about the mediating factor in that scene--the radio show I was listening to yesterday morning delved into that bit. As in,
the traffic and news reporters (both female) were squealing over the prospect of semi-nude Bond!
Are all those Daniel Craig haters eating crow? Cause I want them to have to choke it down.
We're going to see
Stranger than Fiction
at Arclight tonight. Woot!
And we're finally seeing
Borat
at...the United Artists theatre in Emeryville!
I'm not going to be able to finish
Citizen Ruth
before I have to leave for Hollywood tonight but so far it is excellent. Such a great cast.

THIS.
All the naysayers are gonna havta take it all back. He rocks like a rocking thing. Looks. Intensity. Wearing the tux. And those eyes...I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Whoa.
