Buffista Movies 5: Development Hell

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

which ones would the Buffistas recommend I start with?

I've seen only three of the the films listed about, but I'd say, go with Spirited Away. I found the environmental messages in Princess Mononoke way too heavy-handed for my liking -- something SA does with a lot more subtlety. SA also has a great balance of humour and wonder.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

I've only seen Mononoke and Spirited Away, but unlike most of the world, I liked Mononoke better. I don't think I really got Spirited Away. Whereas Mononoke had a pretty clear plot with giant wolves and shit. I watched the American dubbing, for the record, though I think I did watch SA subtitled. Maybe. If it got an American dubbing, then that's what would have been on the DVD.

That's all the Miyazaki I've seen, though I should see more, especially since the creators of Avatar note him as an obvious influence.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

I saw both Nausicaa and Laputa (preferred titles to Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky, respectively) in the original Japanese without subtitles the first time. Still loved them both dearly.

I could lend you my grey-market boxed set, megan.

Tom, as always, you are made of awesome. That would be great. I would, of course, pay postage. Or, my friends that live near you (I think you recently saw them at msbelle's) are coming down here Thanksgiving weekend. S walks home by your place everyday.

While you're in lending mode, you wouldn't happen to have any current BSG episodes, would you? My dvr had to be replaced yet again and, due to a severe misinformation campaign by Atlantic Broadband, I lost all the episodes I had been saving while I was waiting to catch up with past seasons.

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

I've never seen any Miyazaki films, but I'm thinking I should add some to my Netflix queue.

I seriously love 1776, and recommend getting the DVD, which has the extended director's cut including "Cool Conservative Men", and not the butchered-by-Jack-Warner theatrical release. I wish I had seen the concert version that was done locally a few years back that was gender-neutral casting (female John Adams, male Abigail), which I heard was just amazing!

Now tagless for your comfort.

Nausicaa is my favorite. GotF leaves me in a sobbing puddle. I can no longer watch it.

GotF leaves me in a sobbing puddle.

Everytime I see GotF, I go to a Harry Potter place.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

While you're in lending mode, you wouldn't happen to have any current BSG episodes, would you?

No, sorry.

Thrive to spite them

Spirited Away is the first movie of his I've seen. Howl's Moving Castle looked interesting and I meant to go see it but it didn't stay at the indie movie house long enough so I missed it. Which is why it's next on the list.

There were some things about Spirited Away that sort of confused me - I never really understood about No Face, like why he was eating all the creatures but the girl said the bathhouse made him "bad" (at least in the subtitles) so I accepted that. I thought maybe there was something that got lost in translation about the character.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

There was a line in the subtitled version that provided a semi-explanation (although not complete because it's all dream-logic), askye, but I've forgotten what it was. I remember it, though, because that was something that had always bugged me, and I couldn't understand why they wouldn't have translated it into the dubbed version.
