My first kiss…
I was 16…almost 17. We have good family friends that live on St. Thomas, USVI. My parents contracted to do a conference there for two weeks at the beginning of the summer. They worked it out so we kids could come too, and we stayed with our family friends. Family friends had three kids – a daughter who was 22, and two sons – 18 and 15. My brothers and I spent the first week there laying on the beautiful beaches, going snorkeling, shopping and just plain hanging out. Friday night our friends’ 18-year-old son came home from his private school in Florida, where he was studying to be a pilot. His two buddies picked him up at the airport, then they stopped by the house to say hi to his family and drop off his stuff before they went out for the night.
I was sitting on the couch watching tv in my pj’s. I’d been in the sun all day, had taken a shower and wasn’t wearing a bit of make-up when in walked the three most gorgeous guys I’d ever seen. I wanted to go crawl in a hole and die, but I smiled sweetly when introduced to each one. Then I ran into the room I was staying in (the oldest son’s bedroom), and hid there until they left. I found out later that one of his friends, Ethan, had asked who I was after they met me that first night. On Monday, Marco (the oldest son) came in his room to get something while I was reading. He told me I should go out with him and his friends while I was there. I was flabbergasted – in a good way. I couldn’t believe he’d asked *me.* I knew he had a girlfriend back in Florida, but it would still be fun hanging out with those three guys for a night. So, the next Friday night we planned on going out.
His sister came up and got me early in the evening to help me get ready. She didn’t think I should wear anything I had brought (remember…I was a good, conservative Christian girl…and my wardrobe showed it). So, we went and raided her closet. When I came back upstairs I thought my parents were going to forbid me from leaving the house. They did veto the first shirt, but I got by with the back-up choice (a sleeveless jean shirt that we tied just above the belly button right after we left the house). I was also DRENCHED in perfume (Calvin Klein’s Escape, to be exact). So much so I couldn’t believe my parents didn’t comment on it. My mom’s only comment was, “You kids have fun sailboat racing. Make sure you put on plenty of bug spray.” To this day I have no idea where the sailboat-racing story came from. I wasn’t going to deny it, though.
About 8pm Leah and I headed out to meet the guys. I still had no idea where we were going, but I assumed it wasn’t sailboat racing. We ended up at this club, and Leah gave me strict instructions on how I was going to get in. I was her cousin from Puerto Rico and my wallet had been stolen at the airport. I was 19 years old…almost 20. They didn’t even try to card me. Once inside the club we found the boys, Leah found her friends, and I was pretty much on my own. I actually got really shy for a while. I’d never been anywhere like this before. I just sat and took it all in.
Eventually Ethan came and asked me to dance. I kind of giggled and was like, “Sure. But I should probably tell you I’ve never danced before in my life.” He looked at me, leaned in and whispered, “By the end of the night, you’re going to be the best dancer out there.” So, we dance all. Night. Long. At a little after midnight, Leah came looking for me. We were supposed to find Marco so we could go. My parents would be wondering where I was. Ethan thought he had seen Marco go “outside,” so we went to look for him. Our looking ended at the first car we came to. He picked me up and put me on the hood of the car. We talked for quite a while…about what I have no idea. All I remember is he eventually asked me, “What would you do if I kissed you?” I’m like, “I don’t know. I’ve never been kissed before.”
And with, “Well, why don’t we find out?” he leaned in and kissed me. To this day, (continued...)
