At work today, the smoke detectors all went off. 32 degrees outside. No smoke or fire that we observed, but there was nothing for it but to haul all the clients out into the cold and dial 911. We grabbed all the coats and blankets we could find easily to wrap 'em up warm. Female cop got there first and suggested backing the van out of the garage and piling everyone into it to get them out of the cold, but before I could do that, the fire department arrived. They quickly determined that yes, there was no fire nor yet any other danger, and suspected either the high humidity (had a vaporizer and a humidifier going, plus someone had just had a shower) or a wiring malfunction.
This, of course, sounds so calm and ordinary, but you can just imagine that I was internally completely freaked out.
