You're right -- Nicholas is definitely a Christian saint, and a historical figure. What I was getting at (and snarking a bit, and failing, and my apologies), is that Santa Claus isn't just St. Nicholas, and isn't even associated with Nicholas in a lot of places (He's sometimes St. Martin, or St. Basil, or Odin) and gift-giving father-figures at Solstice go way, way back.
Another of those instances where the modern holiday is layered over older practices, and I clearly need more coffee.

Coffee sounds like an excellent suggestion. I know my body actually needs water. It's fairly crying out for water, but my brain is closer to my ears and is fairly SCREAMING for caffeine.

Hmmm.... I've only been taking steroids for a little more than 24 hours, but I already notice an improvement in my left eye's vision. Rather than having the center of my visual field being one blurry mess, it's gone back to being blotches of blurry intermixed with patches of clear.
There is arguably a complete lack of valid scientific evidence of the efficacy of any treatment for my condition (depending on which Doctors you listen to) but there is anecdotal evidence that steroids help some people (some of those quite a lot) and does nothing for other people. When I discussed with my Dr. the anecdotes of some people's improvement on steroids, he said, "But for all we know, those people would have improved without the steroids," but he was willing to give it a try.
::crossing my fingers that things will continue to improve::
