Also, is it the caffeine in coffee that makes it so it's not good for hydration? Does that mean black tea is less bad and herbal just fine?
Yes, caffiene is a diuretic. (Though I remember reading some months back that coffee can still count towards your daily 8 glasses of water, according to whichever authorities keep track of such things. It'll just hydrate you more slowly.)
