It was from a Teppy comment about people who get so wrapped up in their new romances that every subject is related back to that person.
Such as:
Joe: "Do you know any good recipes for carrots?"
Jane: "Yes I saw one in Cook's Illustrated last month."
Sue: "Bob likes carrots!"
Then it quickly became shorthand for any obsession which becomes the narrow lens through which you view everything around you.
In my world, baseball, music and haircuts like carrots.
I hope it crapped on something foolishly expensive. Hopefully lots of somethings.

For your information, I searched (but did not actually read) the FAQ page before posting but found no reference to carrots. (Also, it seems that the phrase means different things to Hec and Aimee.)

I will admit I didn't even search. I read the whole FAQ long ago, before delurking (or, well, most of it), but my brain didn't hold onto the carrot info.
"The Wire" likes urban carrots. Pelecanos likes funky Greek carrots.
