My mom called earlier. She said my nephew had an extraordinary adventure at a farm.
He saw horses, turkeys, and cows.
She asked, "what sound did the cows make?"
He said, "mooooooo."
She asked, "What sound did the turkeys make?"
He said, "Turkeys bite me."
And held up one bandaided finger, which he was apparently using to poke at turkeys.
My brother's toddler story that is still told in the family (45 years later) is of the time some of the uncles decided to test him on his animal noises.
"Kip, what sound does a cow make?"
"Mooo."
"What sound does a dog make?"
"Ruff ruff!"
"What sound does a turtle make?"
Long pause. Then, "Turd turd?"
Allyson, that's adorable. Hopefully he'll learn to not poke. But don't hold your breath. That's how my twentysomething brother got nipped by an anteater.....
My singer is a treadle machine. My parents once salvaged one similar. The machine itself was badly beat up, as was much of the cabinet, but my dad was able to take out the drawer boxes and the tip-tilt front box. He made a cabinet for the 8 drawers, down to getting oak with the right grain and stain. It's GORGEOUS. He mounted the tiptilt drawer in its own wee cabinet under the edge of his shop table. He currently keeps drill bits in it.
For the base, he topped it with butcherblock, and it resides in the kitchen. It's a great work surface. And pretty!
Any chance meara's around at all?
ETA: Er, if she is she oughta IM me. I'm not really away, just showing my ex-roomie Dr. Who.
I have a "portable" Singer from the 60's. It's steel or iron. It's 50 pounds if it's an ounce.
Also Rice pasta is gluten free. And it doesn't taste as much like ass as you would think.
Ass-ish? Ass-like? Reminiscently assesque?
It was just a little chewier than wheat pasta.
I'm bored.
Just looked it up, and my machine is from 1920's E series (records lost by Singer.) It's like this one, but only 2 drawers, not 3. And the wood is darker, but that is probably age: [link]
I'm gonna find a picture of mine.
eta: HOLY CARP! This is the same series/decals as mine: [link] And mine is in better shape (machine, the cabinet has some water damage on the foldout that I eventually hope to fix.)
$20. I paid $20 for it.
