Dunno if this was mentioned nationwide...

Minnesota's polio case is a health puzzler

How did a baby in central Minnesota contract the virus that causes polio, a crippling disease that was essentially wiped out in the United States a quarter century ago?

That question has mystified state and federal health officials since tests confirmed the polio virus in an unidentified infant last week.

The case is especially puzzling because the baby, who was born in this country, was somehow exposed to a strain of virus found in oral polio vaccines, which haven't been used in the United States for five years.

"[It] is not a public health concern for the general public," said Kris Ehresmann, chief of immunization at the Minnesota Health Department. "But it is definitely a situation that is of great scientific interest. It's a unique situation."

Investigators now are testing relatives and others who have had close contact with the child to see whether anyone else may have been infected. They suspect that someone contracted the polio virus in another country and unwittingly passed it on.

Going for a triple with a quote.

"The last time somebody said, 'I find I can write much better with a word processor.', I replied, 'They used to say the same thing about drugs.'"

Good Trouble and Righteous Fights

Annabel has the sniffles, to the point Dylan may have to stay home with her tomorrow rather than spend most of the day with a friend of mine as originally planned, lest she infect the friend's toddler.

I'm starting to get an itchy nose and a tickle in my throat. In the next 48 hours of my life, I will be A) very busy, and B) very much in the public eye, including speaking in front of 150 people or so. And I don't do well with most cold medicines, since sudafed makes me jittery, with galloping heart.

Nooooooooo!!!!!!

t pops vitamin C candy like, well, candy

I got a small box of stuff that was my grandma's today. There was a gorgeous heart-shaped Wedgewood bowl, a Disney bracelet, a lace handkerchief, and a letter that I wrote to her when I was 6. It was nice to get it all.

I missed -t again! Bummer.

Gloomcookie, that sounds lovely. I'm glad you got those few pieces to help you remember her.

Why, oh why am I up at 4am? This does not bode well for the day.

Gloomcookie, that's so sweet!

I'm waiting for the baby to fall asleep, and he's apparently waiting for hell to freeze over.

That seems to have worked, vw! You're hired!

Now I'm going to get a quick nap myself, as it's a busy afternoon: grocery store to stock up for the weekend, then the babysitter gets here at 5:00. Robert scored us VIP tickets to the Titanic exhibit, so we'll go see that, and then we are meeting a friend from Moldova for dinner.

Should be fun for us, but poor Mallory has decided he hates the babysitter, so I don't envy him or her.
