Yeah, everyone knows this one, but it’s a) a great song and b) a good introduction to the theme. So here it goes.

One of my favorite songwriters. Killer lyrics on this one.

3. Year Of The Pig [UK Edit] - Fucked Up - Year Of The Pig 4:39
I don’t know that everyone will dig this as much as I do. But I love what they’ve done with hardcore. It’s like Minor Threat covering King Crimson, only interesting and fun.

4. Hound Dog - Acetone - If You Only Knew 3:43
All the songs on this album are named after classic rock & roll hits. But they have nothing to do with them. I love sleepy guitar-heavy Sister-Lovers-influenced stuff, though.

Ha! Yeah, Brian, why don’t you bring your horse into the recording studio? That would be far-out!

11. Walking the Cow - K. McCarty - Dead Dog's Eyeball: The Songs Of Daniel Johnston 3:15
The former lead singer of Glass Eye (produced by Brian Beattie, their guitarist) on a great, great album of Daniel Johnston covers. I always had a hard time convincing people that his songs were somewhat sophisticated because he is not a sophisticated musician. His versions are loud, primitive, and screechy. Kathy McCarty brings the heart and soul.

12. Cow - Melvins - Bullhead 4:31
This song amuses me so much. Two minutes of heavy stoner metal. Two-and-a-half of drum solo. And what a great drum solo! It’s like one of those jokes that goes on so long it gets awful and then funny again. Every time he winds up and you think it’s over, and then - boom! - he’s back. By the end, I’m always just enjoying the sound of the drums, and I’m surprised when it’s over.

13. Alligator (Choir Version) - Grizzly Bear - Friend EP 5:12
This song was very short on the first Grizzly Bear album, but this version just kills me with the pretty shimmery sound.

14. This Lamb Sells Condos - Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds 4:39
Arty arty arty. One man band does high-concept chamber pop.

15. Panda Panda Panda - Deerhoof - Apple O' 2:41
Tempo changes, skronky guitar, lovely swipes of pop: Deerhoof.

16. Painbirds - Sparklehorse - Good Morning Spider 3:49
Another one-man band. I like his somewhat Tom-Waitsian aesthetic, although when he gets going, Sparklehorse is a lot creepier.

Au wants to be Animal Collective.

18. A Dead Mouse - Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain 3:55
An alter-ego of MF Doom, who may be the nerdiest, laziest, and highest of all rappers.

19. Chicken Rhythm - Slim Gaillard - Slim & Slam 2:51
Slim invented his own language, the vout. I think “chicken rhythm” is the only English in the song. Unless he was presciently singing about J.Lo.

New Jersey indie band from the early 80s that never got their due. Recently re-released.

22. Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey - The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms 4:17
Ditto all the way down to the New Jersey, except everyone loves the Feelies.

23. Modern Farmer - Yung Wu - Shore Leave 2:22
This is one of the Feelies’ alter-ego bands, along with the Trypes and a few other names. In this version, percussionist Dave Weckerman was the lead singer and some members of Speed the Plough filled out the sound.

24. Flop Eared Mule - The Holy Modal Rounders - 1 & 2 2:18
Too high and lazy to learn the traditional songs they were playing, the Holy Modal Rounders made it all up as they were going. World, world, real real world.
