I used to get to hear live music a lot via bar bands, though. Ticket prices plus babysitters plus inconvenient venues made shows a no-go for a while.

Yeah, and for six months out of last year, I wasn't trying very hard, so... yes, depending on the concert and venue, sometimes the band waves at me now. t facepalm
ETA: I go to a lot of shows at small venues that are about $10 a pop, or even free, and I take public transit to get there, otherwise I wouldn't be able to afford it.
College roommate was the head techie at the campus radio station, which got him in line for tickets at all sorts of concerts. I'd go with him if he couldn't get a date.
I got to see the Beach Boys from the front row that way.
A friend of mine used to work for the Phoenix, so we used to get to go to shows a lot. Now, NSM. Granted, I saw Laurie Anderson a few weeks ago, but I think the last show I saw before that was well over a year before.
How was Laurie Anderson? I haven't seen her since, uh, the Bright Red tour, maybe? 1995-ish. She was working on her Moby Dick work then, but it was pretty early in the process.
I used to go to lots of shows, too, but I haven't been out for live music in a crazy long time. Kids. I'm thinking about trying to get out to see Peter Brotzmann tomorrow night, but tomorrow's also my anniversary, and my wife likes Brotzmann about as much as she likes sticking forks in her eyes.

That's one of the sweet things about life in NYC. $5-7 for a show is pretty normal and you take the subway home.
One of my favorite shows ever was scalping tickets for the Dead at the Garden, last minute, the night before Jake was going to be induced. A last hurrah! With Deadheads patting my belly! Good times.

I saw her at a summer concert two years ago (with Tuvan throat-singers), and she seemed exactly the same as she was in the 80s. Same haircut and everything.

Really really good. It was a new work that I guess will be out on disc this summer called Homeland. It definitely had some moments of political commentary, but it was mainly about the feeling of having lost your country from different perspectives. Very spare stage set up (candles and dangling lights plus musicians) and it was just her and three other musicians.
Unfortunately, musically it was very mellow (though gorgeous) and I was exhausted that day, so I actually started nodding a little towards the end, which was embarassing because I was in the front row.
I tend to go to concerts with a posse of underage fangirls, although two of them recently (finally) turned 21, so at least I'm not the only one with a wristband.
Huh. Really? That young? I've always picture the Chicago crew as older than that!
The posse I met up with at Cobra Starship were all old enough to be in the bar.
