Buffista Music III: The Search for Bach

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Also, I can't help Daisy Jane with her request, but how often does one hear Shostakovich mentioned twice in the same day? Turns out he used a theremin in a film score he did: [link]

"This bar smells like kerosene and stripper tears."

Awesome!

Dude who's taking me to the symphony Saturday loaned me his cd and pointed me at this [link] so I'm covered. Thanks for thinking of me though!

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

How Yo La Tengo Got Their Name

Heh, I've heard that story before, although this is the first time I've heard Kranepool tell it, and I never get tired of it. It's one of the all time great baseball stories.

I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve. - John Prine

Just got my copy of Hec's book & am looking forward to starting it on my subway ride home.

I spent most of the weekend cleaning up the basement. My turntable is down there so I listened to a bunch of stuff that I don't have on CD. I finally got around to ripping some of them to mp3. Below are the liner notes. I put them on flyupload. If anyone wants them just email me. (If you haven't emailed me before you'll probably bump into my Earthlink spam filter. Ignore it. I will add you to my list.)

01 The Rolling Stones - "Bye, Bye Johnny" Around And Around
Early (1964) Stones playing Chuck Berry. Perfect like a cheeseburger: I don't care if it's simple, it NEVER wears out its welcome.

02 The Animals - "Story of Bo Diddley" Best Of The Animals
"Where's the bar? Please show me to the bar."

03 Bo Diddley - "Story of Bo Diddley" Bo Diddley in the Spotlight
Now hear the story from the man himself. Killer diller.

04 Bob Dylan - "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" Bringing It All Back Home
"They asked me for some collateral and I pulled down my pants." The thing I hate most about all the "Judas!" mythology is the solemnity of it all. Detractors and defenders alike seem to forget that he was really funny and really having a blast (at least musically) around the time he went electric.

05 Howlin' Wolf - "Three Hundred Pounds of Joy" Chess Blues Masters Series
"Hoy, Hoy! I'm the boy. I got 300 lbs of heavenly joy!" I may not actually be in that neighborhood but I'm much closer than I should be.

06 The Allman Brothers Band - "Blue Sky" Eat A Peach
Among their very best. Duane solos first, then they intertwine, then Dickey Betts takes. So beautiful.

07 Elvis Presley - "Little Sister" Elvis' Golden Records, Vol. 3
Elvis stole this from Robert Plant. Or something like that.

08 Charlie Rich - "I Can't Go On" Fully Realized
Hooray Arkansas! Charles Portis! J. William Fulbright! Charlie Rich!

09 The Yardbirds - "I'm A Man" Having A Rave Up With The Yardbirds
I love when Beck gets to the end of the fretboard & decides that's no reason to stop soloing.

10 Benny Spellman - "Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette)" It Will Stand (Minit Records 1960-1963)
I know we have some Greil Marcus fans here. You've read the book. Maybe you saw the show (hi, Trudy!). Here's the song.

11 Al Green - "Love Ritual - Bwana Mix" Listen The Rarities
"Bwannnnaaaa! Bwannnnaaaa!" Whatever you say, Rev. Al. When you sing it and play it like this I'm delighted to listen.

12 Maurice Williams - "Stay" Oldies but Goodies Vol. 5
The shortest number 1 single ever. You know the falsetto (and it is really great), but my favorite part is how he manages to make "just a little bit longer" and "tell me you're goin' to" into a rhyme.

13 Mick Jagger - "Memo From Turner" Performance Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Ry Cooder's a hell of a guitar player.

14 Randy Newman - "Gone Dead Train" Performance Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
A pre-Viara lament.

15 The Pretenders - "Message Of Love" Pretenders II
This one makes me happy. But then I think about when it came out: man, I was miserable back then. And half the band OD'ed! Jesus, that's pathetic. Then I think, "but I still love the song and it makes me happy." Music is funny that way.

16 The Impressions - "I've Been Trying" Right On Time
Great, great singing.

17 Stevie Wonder - "I Wish" Songs in the Key of Life
This might be the first album I bought. And "I Wish" and "Sir Duke" were hits before "Flashlight" so I probably bought it before I bought the Parliament LP. Good way to start either way! Mindboggling to think that he was only 25 or 26 when he made this AND had been a star for literally half his life at that point.

18 Bobby Bland - "Poverty" The Best of Bobby Bland
Most of what Van Morrison learned about timbres came either from Ray Charles or Bobby "Blue" Bland. Listen to "die" right after "they won't let me join the welfare line". Yow.

19 The Soul Stirrers - "Jesus Wash Away My Troubles" The Gospel Soul of Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers Vol. 1
My favorite Sam Cooke performance. His first JeeeEEEsus is enough to make me forget the manymanymany melismatic sins of Whitney/Mariah/Celine/every other American Idol contestant.

20 Jerry Butler - "Hey, Western Union Man" The Legendary Hits
Chicago soul man kicks off the TSOP era.

21 Marti Jones - "If I Can Love Somebody" Used Guitars
Beautiful dobro playing by Sonny Landreth & beautiful singing by Marti. I love this so much that I'm always surprised at how cold the rest of the record leaves me.

22 Wilson Pickett - "Ninety-Nine and One-Half (Won't Do)" Wilson Pickett's Greatest Hits
More killer guitar, this time courtesy of the song's co-writer, Steve Cropper. Wilson Pickett might have had misgivings when Jerry Wexler dragged him down South but oh man did it work out great!

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

It took several attempts at ordering it, but Amazon is finally shipping me a copy of David's book. Yay!

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Huzzah with the buying and reading of my book. I endorse this trend.

Joe, that's a killer mix.

I really like Marti Jones' first two albums, though I really kind of need to own this one.

"I Wish" is probably my favorite Stevie Wonder song.

I look more rad than Lutheranism

It took several attempts at ordering it, but Amazon is finally shipping me a copy of David's book. Yay!

I just got an e-mail yesterday telling me that Amazon is shipping my bro's copy to him. I'll report his review once he's read it.

Punishingly Intricate

Corwood! Did you know there's an interview with Linda Thompson in the newest issue of The Believer ?

We're reading that issue for my book club (this year it's All Magazines!).

Anyway, in Small World news the guy who interviewed her is a friend of mine from college.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.
