Buffista Music III: The Search for Bach

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

with a gleam in my eye, and an almost airtight alibi

Rhett informed the audience last night that Blender magazine had deemed the Old 97's "Murder or a Heart Attack" the 167th-best song since 1980. And that, for some reason, they didn't believe that it was *really* about missing a lost cat.

ETA: You can only see 1-250 in the magazine, apparently, but 251-500 are up at the site: [link]

Apparently, 251 is "Don't Believe the Hype," which should be higher-rate than that, and 500 is Coldplay's "Yellow," which seems about right.

I remember the crazy days. 500 posts an hour. Nubmer! Natgbsb

AH, Rhett. Wish that I was up for catching the show.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I looked at the magazine. "Billie Jean" is their #1. "B.O.B." by Outkast is #2. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is #5.

It's an odd yet predictable list.

Oh, c'mon -- you did NOT predict this:

271. Don't Stop Believin'
Journey [1981]
Fist-pumping underdog fight song + lots of beer = karaoke bliss.
Available on: Escape (Columbia)

272. Rock the Casbah
The Clash [1982]
London punks spread Mideast peace the old-fashioned way: with disco records.
Available on: Combat Rock (Epic)

That's the odd part. I mean, they had a lot of odd choices in their 500, but the top tier was predictable. Well, except "B.O.B" at #2. I would not have guessed that. There just didn't seem to be any guiding logic to it. At least it wasn't a Rolling Stone list. Those are the worst.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

You say that like you don't think that every single moment of Mick Jagger's life has produced sheer brilliance.

BTW, Hec, did you see my link to the faux-Ignatius Reilly love letter to Bush in Natter?

Yeah, that was brilliant.

My casting for Ignatius: Oliver Platt. Or Vincent D'onofrio.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I pitched the Dolls' Too Much Too Soon and Tom Waits' Swordfishtrombones for the 33 1/3 series.

I heard from the editor and he's leaning a bit torwards the Waits, but I'll get a chance to make a formal proposal in November. I've asked Kim to pimp hard for me.

Send me some book-ma. It'd be a dream to write about either record.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Great David! I was hoping you'd make a pitch.

It'd be cool! I don't think I did my best writing in Lost In The Grooves (though I think the book, on the whole, is probably stronger than Bubblegum, and I did more to shape Grooves editorially), so I'd love an opportunity to really stretch as a writer.
