Buffista Music III: The Search for Bach

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

My favorite song title is, "I Got Tears in my Ears from Lying on my Back in my Bed as I Cry Over You."

Heh. I've actually had that experience.

I knew that topless lady had something up her sleeve. - John Prine

So - is this the best album title ever?

My favorite is Band of Gypsies -- this one, not this one. C'est drĂ´le. Not funny if you aren't familiar with the Hendrix album & don't know that Taraf de Haidouks are a buncha gypsies, but very witty if you do. If I weren't a Hendrix freak, and he hadn't unleashed "Machine Gun" that night, I'd probably take the Romany over the rock god, too.

Speaking of romantic, have you ever heard In Spite of Ourselves by John Prine and Iris DeMent?

Many times. I think I've sent it to Buffistarawk in the past, or maybe put it on a Frankenmix, or both. My cousin-by-marriage used to live a couple doors away from Iris, & Alice was kind enough to have a party when we were in town so that I could meet her. I was sleep-deprived & a little starstruck so I didn't say much, but I was a couple feet away from her when someone put on "No Time to Cry," and I took the opportunity to tell her that I thought it was her best song & one of my favorites period. Nice Christgau piece on the Prine & Dement set, the old Chevrolet (pronounce the T) set.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

Band of Gypsies

I looked at Track One and immediately went to an Eric Cartman place.

I may have to sing "Are You Drinkin' With Me Jesus?"

I KNOW THIS SONG! I love it! We'll have to sing it together at some point.

There's an image challenge on at B3ta right now. What if song lyrics were literally true? Half of them went over my head but some of the rest are damn funny.

Sean K: have you got a copy of "The Pleasure Barons" they do my favorite version of so many songs, including "Are You Drinkin' With Me Jesus?" or I should say, they did. RIP Country Dick Montana. You were a big big man.

Nay, I do not.

Live in Las Vegas

We saw them in LA and I'm pretty sure it was the best show I've ever attended. Country Dick, Mojo Nixon, Dave Alvin and two guys from X. After the show Country Dick totally hit on my sister-in-law.

edit: the Drinkin With Me Jesus song doesn't seem to be on that record. Now I wonder how I came by it.

Dog is my co-pilot.

joe, thanks for the Prine/DeMent link. Some friends of ours had the lyrics to In Spite of Ourselves printed on their wedding program.

Oh, Jilli, I think you need to see this.
