It sounds like Ernest Tubb when he's working on three hours sleep and a tub full of gin, you mean!
Other than that track and the Nina Gordon, the only thing I have is a small audio clip of John Darnielle singing along with the "Ignition" remix to bassist Peter Hughes's ringtone of same from a Mountain Goats show last year. The audience went crazy.
Thinking about it, I'm surprised no one's done "99 Problems"...
Tricky is a rapper, tho'. But his version of Black Steel rules all.
Okay, so somebody (Jim?) mentioning Jackie Wilson sent me to the iTunes store, where I see Dexy's Midnight Runners did a cover of "Jackie Wilson Said." Want.
Wasn't me. But if you don't have that first Dexy's album you need it. Actually, you pretty much need all 3 Dexy's albums, but especially that one.
Corwood is bang on about Fortress Of Solitude - if you read just the first 3/4ths as a memoir of growing up in '70s Brooklyn it's brilliant, but the ending is a mess. It's not as good as
Motherless Brooklyn.
Hey Jim -- I can't remember -- what was the name of your semi-famous journalist landlord?
t edit
never mind. I did a search. Everett True, right?
I lost my copy of Fortress of Solitude when I was 2/3 of the way through. I was liking it, though.
No real reason. FAQWife is reading Simon Reynolds' new book and it came up in conversation.
How's she finding the book? I've dipped in and out, but I'm too agnostic about most of the bands he's on about to do much more.
Hey, Chi-town fans of odd, avant-folk music! Jandek is playing in your town tomorrow!
Jandek is playing Chicago on Thursday, at the Empty Bottle. Tickets on>sale now at ticketweb.com.
Here's the announcement the Bottle sent out:
Acid Mother's Temple cancel, JANDEK mysteriously appears -->Unfortunately, due to complications relating to some visa issues, ACID>MOTHER'S TEMPLE have had to cancel their September 22nd appearance.>Unbelievably, mysterious cult legend JANDEK has agreed to perform>instead. This is, holy shit, as big as it gets folks. Perhaps the most>enigmatic man in music, JANDEK has been, mysteriously, issuing albums>for nearly thirty years with nary a word to the outside world. In a>bewildering twist, JANDEK made his very first live appearance last year,>unannounced to the larger world of course, and done so with no advanced>fan fare. He has since agreed to only a handful of live performances, so>one can't be sure when to expect the next. JANDEK will open the show on>Thursday September 22nd performing promptly at nine. As we've said, it>doesn't really get much more exciting than this. Tickets purchased for>ACID MOTHER'S TEMPLE will of course be honored.
How's she finding the book?
She's not familiar with many of the bands he writes about, but she loves his writing, so she's enjoying it quite a bit. I'll read it eventually, at some point after she's done, and she's quite keen to know my take on it since, y'know, I am familiar with nearly all the bands he writes about.
