I battle evil. But I don't really win. The bad keeps coming back and getting stronger. Like that kid in the story, the boy that stuck his finger in the duck.

The artist formerly associated with cupcakes.

Because I am a jaded ElderGoth, I can't help but think that emo is just a re-naming of a certain subspecies of babygoths. I mean, heaven knows I can't tell babygoths from emokids most of the time; I just look at them and go "Awwww! Sullen little munchkins! C'mere pumpkin, let me fix your eyeliner."

I always thought emokids wore more sweaters, but that may just be my misperception.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

Emo Phillips has a lot to answer for.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

One sensitivillion.

Heh.

So I was checking out the competition other 33 1/3 books at the Virgin Megastore over lunch. Unfortunately, the Who Sells Out book was exactly the kind of book I don't want to write or really read. The Music From Big Pink novella looked bleak but well written. Best of the lot (today) was the one for 69 Love Songs, which features comments from our very own Herself! (under her own name). She's not a big part of the proceedings, but nonetheless, it was startling to encounter her name there.

Anyway, the book is an excellent fun read and recommended to any fan of 69 Love Songs. It's written/designed by one of the contributors to the 69 Love Songs, LD Beghtol. The first half is encyclopedic - sort of like Franklin Bruno's book on Armed Forces. But light and erudite and fun and witty and well-designed with lots of illos. The second half is a song by song overview with quotes by various band members (including Stephin Merritt) and fans (like Herself) about recording the song, writing the song, playing it live or a personal take on the song. All very enjoyable.

It finishes with the live shows done after the album came out, including the Somerville show. I'm presuming Jon B. was there.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Nope. I did go to an earlier one-night stand they did at the Middle East, though.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss them all tonight…

totally shallow and OT post from Ms. Lurker

OMG, I need conversion software so I can put Corb Lund's "Hockey Game" song up for EVERYONE. It calls out David Allan Coe, and is just brilliant, and is so very Canadian, and dissolves in fit of giggles

Seriously, I wish iTunes had a setting for "play me this song every time. Every time, bitch!"

Oh well, looks like I missed it. What did you think of it, Corwood?

I heard about half before I had to go to bed, but it had some excellent Nels Cline shreddage. A couple of the songs seemed a bit oriented towards two-chord jam-band stuff, which isn't a good trend, although I'd rather hear Cline extend a solo than just about anyone else. It was hard to get a grasp on the songs otherwise. I'm not immediately bowled away like I was with the last 2 studio albums.

In other news, I saw Richard Thompson play last night and got to speak with him briefly about the book. I think he's interested in seeing what it's going to say.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Very cool, Corwood!
