I got a better description of the project this morning when I drove him to school. He needs the 10 selections on a CD with just a listing and short blurb on each. Then he needs to take one of them and create a complete "video" in a format of his choice. It can be his friends jumping around on video playing air guitar, flash animation, whatever. He'll probably do some combination. Betcha he picks one of the Rap songs.
He really appreciates all the suggestions, as do I. Guess I'll have to YouTube his video.

I love it when kids' projects are so fun for us. I rec a German rap group of the early 90s called Die Fantastischen Fier, who had a hit on MTV Europe at the time called "Die Da". ("Her there.") German is great for rap, since practically everything rhymes with something. This song was of the 'goofy white boys ogle girls' genre of rap. That's a rap genre, right?

Lots of good suggestions from people (megan: yay, De Palmas!). Luaka Bop put out a cool compilation a few years ago called Cuisine Non-Stop: Introduction to the French Nouvelle Generation that I like a lot. I'll send Lo'Jo's "Baji Larabat" from that album to BR2. Also, not really obscure (at least, not to anyone keeping up with popular YouTube videos: [link] but I can send O-Zone's "Dragostea Din Tei" (from Moldova, I think) as well, if you want.

Just remembered another that may win coolness points. The Mammas, a vocal group of four women from four different Mediterranean countries -- one Spanish, one Italian, one Greek, and one French Algerian (IIRC). They recorded at least one album in the mid-'90s, with songs in several languages. "Amaria" in particular is a wonderful song sung in Italian -- with a great video if you can find it.
And seconding "Dragostea Din Tei," though Brendon may not appreciate boy bands.

I've got some Swedish and Danish stuff I could add. Of course, I've got tons of French, but megan's got that covered. Germany can be done - I like the "Hallo Gallo" suggestion. Even if the teacher guesses, Brendon would get major coolness points for using Neu! Iceland is Bjork, but I doubt that will stump him. (Is Iceland Europe anyway?)
Oh! I've got some Dutch garage rock I could throw out. Q65 and The Outsiders.
Let me know when the teacher gets to Asia and South America 'cuz I can do some stuff there as well.
