I can't figure that out, since the S1 DVDs will.
You mean they do?

I don't think my Season 1 DVD's have subtitles. Or at least, I can't find them. (I was just trying a couple of days ago.)
Isn't that redundant, if the shows are already captioned for broadcast?
I don't think they use the same text. In fact, I think that closed captioning is for the hard of hearing and assume you can't hear anything (which is why they go into more detail about non-speaking sounds), and subtitles assume you can hear it just fine.
Were there a lot of subtitles? I guess I don't really notice them as such anymore.
My apartment is right by a loud road, and I watch everything with subtitles and/or closed captioning on. So I always want them on everything.

Not subtitles for foreign languages used on the show, English subtitles to display the dialogue on the screen. Most DVDs have them these days, I think. Except VM S2, apparently.
Freaks and Geeks and Queer as Folk also do not have them.
Freaks and Geeks doesn't have them? Seriously? They have EVERY EXTRA KNOWN TO MAN, and they don't have subtitles? Weird.
Maybe my subtitle button isn't working....
The best is the Lord of the Rings, because they have subtitles for the commentaries!
Also, relatedly, I was watching Freaks and Geeks, and Percy Daggs III was playing a competitor in a Math Competition, with no lines!
Isn't that redundant, if the shows are already captioned for broadcast?Yes and no. In addition to what ita mentioned, the subtitles have fewer errors than CC text. CC appears on a black box background, which blots out some of the picture. The subtitles are just in a contrasting text color, and much less intrusive.
You mean they do?
Yes, I do mean do, Jon. I also know the difference. I simple made a mistake, while distracted by something else. It was so uncomfortable to be called on in this fashion over such a nothing post. It actually left me close to tears. t /truth stickler

On the main menu, "languages" is one of the options, Sophia. Select it, and it will bring you to a screen where you can chose the English subtitles.
