"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

Well, on the up side, making everybody in highschool leave the country would vastly decrease the number of teen-driving deaths in the US.

...um, yeah. That kind of ex-cloaca exposition of how "obviously" we can fix major social problems instantly with no expense or expertise, if only we would listen to him, is so very much like -- George? Is that you??

Silence means security silence means approval

Got an e-mail from my librarian friend in Mississippi this morning with information on donating to help MS libraries:

Friends of Mississippi Libraries, working with the Library Commission and MLA, has established a fund for donations to rebuild those MS libraries severely damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Tax-deductible donations can be made by sending your contributions to:

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Steph, Emily, I don't believe that either of the excerpts you two posted are anything except fiction. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

As for the one I posted, it's real. Apparently Nightline interviewed one (or more?) of the residents of the party house.

"In the equation E = mc⬧, c⬧ is a pretty big honking number." - Scola

Maybe then we won't have to put up with all the political correctness crap of having to be accepting of other's cultures and focus on bettering the culture we have in this country already.

God. Are we still talking about "political correctness crap"? Let me put it this way, you dumb shit. I know that when your ma, Mary Sue, and your pa/uncle/cousin, Bubba Bub, sent you and your eighteen brothers/nephews/cousins off to be schooled by Miss Virgin McFrigid in the one-room schoolhouse, with instructions to spank each other every day to keep some discipline in you, they didn't explain how there'd be people who weren't related to you out there in the world. But there are, and some of them might shoot you if you talk to them like I'm talking to you right now. Or, and I know this smarts, they might not give you the job to which Nature and Nature's God entitle you. So this is why we teach all the little children to try having some understanding and compassion in their souls for people who are not just like them or, failing that, to watch their fucking mouths as a safety issue and as an aid to future employability.

No offense meant to actual Mary Sues, Bubba Bubs, Virgin McFrigids, or children of large families. No real people were depicted in this harangue, and the opinions presented here not only do not reflect the views of the board, they don't even reflect mine. Hyperbole used by an accredited sarcastic person. Do not try at home. The author knows lots of people from the backwoods of lots of places, and none of the people she knows are ignorant bigots.

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government, and to the extent that the federal government didn't fully do it's job right, I take responsibility," Bush said. "I want to know what went right and what went wrong."

"If anything went wrong, I take responsibility for it." This is the kind of taking responsibility that's not.

Yes, this. Bush also seems to have missed the meaning of the first word in "plausible deniability".
