And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I was just coming to post about the blackouts -- our entire LA office (Burbank) is down, and I wasn't sure if any LAistas would have power to post about it.

brillig

Well, I meant to say "kill", not "kiss" the corrupt politicians, but it looks cool that way.

Shit's all sorts of different now.

I would love to head home now. But I have no idea if the trains are running yet.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Check this out. Was this posted in Natter a month ago?

"I think the people want the president to be in a position to make good, crisp decisions and to stay healthy," he said when asked about bike riding while a grieving mom wanted to speak with him. "And part of my being is to be outside exercising."

So, what's that about good, crisp decisions? Huh?

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

Work that's been declared to the IRS (I did a lot of random under the table yardwork in my time)

  • temping at the airport carwash, swing and graveyard shifts
  • Taco Bell, for five months, and I only got the job because I was dating a to-be co-worker (which is also why I quit) who conviced them to hire me. It seems that you're not supposed to be honest about how you see your abilities on the job application, and are instead supposed to claim you're the best thing since sliced bread by marking yourself all fives on scales of one to five.
  • Medical billing. I quit when it became really obvious that there was funny business going on. A month later, they were raided by the FBI and shut down.
  • Random light industrial temping, including several weeks at a printing press.
  • Part time office assistant for a nonprofit. I'm not a good office worker, and the job was very depressing, but it paid some of the bills. My boss owned a wolf hybrid she'd rescued, and the dog was often seen hanging out in her office.
  • DTP work on computer books.
  • Random light industrial work while waiting for more DTP work to come in.
  • More DTP work.
  • Temping DTP (really, UE production) at the EE.
  • Production/Web dev for online learning company (followed by tech crash and depressing period of unemployment)
  • Temping DTP (UE production and web production) at the EE for a few contracts
  • Tempting XML grunt at the other EE.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

"Won't somebody think of the cocker spaniels?"

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

"Won't somebody think of the cocker spaniels?"

Obviously a liberal plot to bring refugee animals to San Francisco so they can gay-marry.

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

Speaking of gay marriage, did I mention that the Mass. state constitutional convention is expected to be unable to pass the resolution that puts "no to gay marriage" on the ballot for a constitutional amendment?

Okay, forgive the tortured elocution. The upshot is, everybody realized that married gay people were no big whoop, except to the small minority of people to whom it is a huge whoop, and that kind of whoop is not exactly bringin' in the votes. Kind of funny. (There's still talk of "No, we meant civil unions," but the outright ban amendment is DOA.)

Anyway, marriage has been a universal right in this state for 17 months, and it pleases me no end how quickly the "no big whoop" status has come about.

But I have no idea if the trains are running yet.

I know the street lights in the area are all blinking red.

Silence means security silence means approval

Useless fact I learned from the magazine section of the Sunday Seattle Times:

The Japanese word katsu (as in tonkatsu or the signs in the U District advertising "chicken katsu") is a corruption of the word cutlet.
