Someone told me that the reason so many LA cars are silver is because they're cheaper to cool since they're reflecting the sun more than the other colours.

Does anyone know if there's actually a discernible difference?

Whether the student has work-study or not is a matter for the department budget -- one student doesn't get paid four times as much as another.

Well, I think this is the problem-- they can't figure out how to balance the budget if they don't know to the penny how much each person is being paid, or how to balance it if they suddenly have "extra" money because the student is on work study.

But they're all like-- But the student gets more money than we can afford to pay them! It is a good thing!

Now, I have heard of departments who will only hire workstudy students, presumably to save money, which sort of makes sense. And I imagine, this is how they balance their budget. But I think they pay students an actual hourly rate.

AND don't get me started on how my "budget" for students is $500 and the set departments is, I kid you not $10,000. Also, they are not hiring any students this semester.

If they stopped doing the shaky accounting, they could hire more students on the same budget, unless I'm reading it wrong. And isn't that kind of the point?

Aiee. My boss has sent me a meeting invite for 3:30 to 4:30. Before I had a chance to ask her if I could leave a little early so I can catch my freaking plane. I tried to reschedule via software, and she says she has no other free time.

I have incredible attendance issues. I'm not sure if she cares about my attendance, but even though I get all my shit done (and then some), I know I could be at my desk more.

I guessed that this was going on -- and they really CAN'T DO THAT. I also wonder if their budget issues aren't so much "can't do the math that shows they could hire more students if they did it right" but "can't make themselves plan sensibly for the fact that they can only legally work 'em X hours/week".

I mean, I too am in a situation (but it is theatre, so normal) where I make about $1.00/hour. But it just seems unfair to the students and weird to me that no one else can see that.

I think also the problem is that for students to get experience doing "upper level"- Master Electrition, Technical Director, Wardrobe-- they need to work a lot of hours. And perhaps these shouldn't be paid student positions but positions for credit....

Also, my particular student actually has workstudy, so she is making more like $9.00/hour.

I really need to get over my job paranoia, man.
