What does LP stand for?
Long Player.
As opposed to EP - Extended Player. (Which is shorter.)

What does LP stand for? Ell Pee. I can't work it out. (I do know what a record is, and am just old enough to say "record" and "album" even when I mean "contents of a CD.")

As Scrappy notes, it was a distinct media from the 78 which was very short. The distinction being...longerness.

I've heard some Edison cylinders (as played on an Edison) and they sounded at least as good as a 78. Less scratched up too.
We get the term "Album" from 78s too, because they were sold in what looked like picture albums. It took a fair number of 78s to do (for example) an opera.
