Yes, there is. There's a hurry, Xander. I'm dying...I may have as few as fifty years left.

Our wings are not tired.

I do see a difference here though, Steph, in that the press isn't rolling over and playing dead nearly as much as they did in the other situations.

I agree. The press is possibly dropping the wrong headed notion that it is unamerican to slam the president. He really is in a position where if he hides away he looks like the uncaring @%^$& he is, and if he appears in public he looks like the uncaring @%^$& he is. About time.

The time to "cut short" the vacation was 3 days before the hurricane, not 3 days after.

I actually wrote a letter to the editor today. Huh. It did help to get some of my frustration out.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

This is an excellent essay (editor of Left Turn journal) from someone who was evacuated, is articulate, loves New Orleans and is pissed. I found it kind of life-affirming.

Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

Yeah, and once you DO 'cut short' go to the disaster, not your favorite photo-op spot on San Diego harbor. He loves those battleships.

Last night (after probably freaking out other people stopped at the light for yelling and banging on the steering wheel- just doing my job to further the impression all B'more drivers are insane!) I felt compelled to write to NPR to thank Siegel & Burnett for doing their jobs, and possibly (as several other sources were reporting it at the time, but they didnt' have Chertoff on the line ) a teeny portion of the job of FEMA and that is So Wrong, but thanks, I'm glad you did it.

um, goodness. I don't think that's a sentence.

I also laid on the horn, but that was more about alleviating frustration with the stupid drivers.

Our wings are not tired.

When Andrew struck we had truck loads of water in beer bottles being delivered by Miller Beer. They shut down their beer production and filled bottles with water.

My memory may be faulty, but I remember help arriving in massive amounts immediately after Andrew.

Really, if someone in authority (I'm looking at you W) had asked bus drivers in the south to volunteer to drive people out they would have come. If a call was made for small boat owners to volunteer they would have come. It was all I could do to keep Brendon from leaving with our boat.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Thanks, guys.

I'm at work for a while longer, but I've bookmarked your posts, and I'll email you when I get home.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

I don't understand why a boat flotilla wasn't already organized to take people out/off of the flooded houses?

During 9/11 in NYC, NJ private boat owners ferried thousands of people off of Manhattan. Granted, this was only across a river, whereas getting into NO is a quite a bit more complicated. But there are Zodiacs that can be brought in, inflated, and put to use very quickly.

Most of the boats in the NOLA vicinity would have been destroyed, along with the docks.

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

I'm so tired of being ashamed of our president. It's not just that he can't or won't solve important problems, it's that he doesn't even see that the problems exist.

That man was going to shank me. Over an omelette. Two eggs and a slice of government cheese. Is that what my life is worth?

When Andrew struck we had truck loads of water in beer bottles being delivered by Miller Beer. They shut down their beer production and filled bottles with water.

A-B did this a couple days ago. They sent down close to 900,000 cans of water.
