Real breads use yeast, and they can be sweet, but generally aren't. They may or may not use eggs. I have a recipe for banana-chocolate-chip bread, which is a yeast bread. It doesn't taste like the banana bread you usually get. Yeast breads require kneading.
Quickbreads use other leavenings than yeast, take less time to prepare, and are closer to cakes. They are almost always sweet (although my beer bread and soda breads are not). They usually use eggs. No kneading required.
Cakes are sweet and use no yeast. They usually use baking powder or baking soda as leavenings, and eggs.
Chikat, is challah a cake then, in your mind? Because, my thought was no, and that takes 4 eggs. But brioche, yes, and that is several eggs. Both of them totally drown in butter, too.
Well, poop. You just robbed me of my efficient definition because I do think of challah and brioche as bread. Hmmm...maybe I can adjust.
Eggs, non-kneaded=cake
Eggs, kneaded=bread
No eggs=bread
Brioches are bread for you, 'suela? And yeasty coffee cakes are bread?
Hmm. Ties into my crumb thing -- if you pour, it's not bread. If you can roll/knead/arrange, it's more likely bread.
ita, if your bread converted to Judaism, it would emerge as a cake on the other side of the circumcision (if it's a male bread) and the mikveh.
(That's the strangest way I've ever spelled "oh, now I want to try that recipe. And now I'm imagining a bread with a little kipa on its top).
No eggs=bread
Vegan cakes stand up and say, "HEY!" to that one.
Cake is sweet; bread is not. Banana bread and that ilk are cakes masquerading as bread. Just like muffins, they're a clever excuse to have cake for breakfast. But they're not fooling anyone, ok?
Speaking of cake bread, Starbucks has a new apple/ginger bread. I tried it this morning, and it's gross, and people should learn from my mistake and skip it.
Just like muffins, they're a clever excuse to have cake for breakfast.
God yes! Muffins have long ceased to not be cupcakes -- I blame coffee shops and their need to serve cakelets and not have people admit to what they were doing.

Yes, and yes. If it's kneaded, it's bread, full stop. You need to knead yeast.
It's not the sweetness/savory that's the determining factor, it's the kneading, which gives that bread-like texture to the dough and the cooked product.
