Have not read Teppy's link yet, but damn, the entire city of New Orleans has been ordered evacuated. Has this ever happened before? Has any city of 485,000 or more ever been evacuated?

Christ. right through New Orleans.
Dana, I hope your folks got out okay.
::sigh:: One of my MN friend's parents chose this week to visit NO. Since the airport is closed, they're stuck, and will be riding out the storm in a big downtown hotel, which assures them they'll be safe....
NOLA.com's Hurricane Center
I admit, I was expecting to click that link and be taken to a page that simply said, in 72-point red asscaps, "GETOUTGETOUTGETOUT!!!"
Because that's really the only thing people can do, which is what worries me for the people in NOLA who *can't* evacuate.
Happy Birthday to Casper.
I hope everyone in the Hurricane's path remains safe and dry. There's not much else to say but yikes!
Happy birthday Casper! What lovely pictures. It's so amazing watching her grow up...
This storm is some scary stuff. It looks so disastrous that it has gone completely past pinging my amazement with what the world can do, the things that are so much bigger than we are.
It turns out that the GF had dumped our friend and he'd offered to bring her here in a desperate attempt to salvage the relationship. A relationship that was failing on familiar turf is not going to get any more solid while touristing.Oooof. I hope the visit goes as smoothly as possible, Raq. Even if they do smooth things out while on vacation, they still will have the same issues when they return. The foolish and wide-eyed hopeful things we'll do for love...
I keep checking to see if Susan has been soaking her in Miracle-Gro.Rut-row... It was supposed to be a secret.
I am watching racing on tv right now and trying to just let the Flexeril hopefully continue to work. I need to figure out if I should be going to work tomorrow.
My doctor doesn't want me back until Wednesday. My boss thinks I shouldn't have to take any time at all off, just play through the pain.
Given the additional damage I managed to self-inflict by my t insert sarcastic voice here crazy getting up and down and switching desks several times while setting a new PC up on our Mac network Friday, she is obviously insane. Yes, the strenuous task of standing up and then sitting down again was too much.
Wow. The Weather Channel sucks. One minute of programming, one minute of commercials, and repeat.
Also (from the AP):
Katrina was "unmitigated bad news" for motorists across the nation because it shut down offshore production of at least 1 million barrels of oil daily and threatened refinery and import operations around New Orleans, said oil analyst Peter Beutel. He predicted crude oil could top $70 a barrel by Monday or Tuesday.
And some black humor:
"We're choosing the best of two evils," said Bryan Steven. "It's either be stuck in the hotel or stuck on the road. ... We'll make it through it."
His wife, wearing a Bourbon Street T-shirt with a lewd message, interjected: "I just don't want to die in this shirt."
