Buffistas Building a Better Board ++
Do you have problems, concerns, or recommendations about the technical side of the Phoenix? Air them here. Compliments also welcome.
Yup. I don't think it is practical to add 'Message Center' and 'Read New' to the button bar with 'First ... Recent' because it won't shrink down well on mobile. But maybe I could add a second bar under it with just 'Message Center' and 'Read New'.
ION, I have now secured a certificate for buffistas.org so https://www.buffistas.org is now an encrypted connection. That means I will need to take the board down sometime tonight to switch to the real domain name. That's a bit too much to try to slip in while waiting on stuff at work.
But maybe I could add a second bar under it with just 'Message Center' and 'Read New'.
This (or some such solution) would be great - I'm realizing now that I'm using the new board for real that I never realized just how much I depend on those two for 98% of my mindless zombie-mode board reading.
I added a very short and simple about page. In large part I just wanted to demo how pages work for admins.
Gud, I added a couple of PRs you can look at whenever. One is just readme tweaks for things i ran into getting everything running, the second adds several view options.
Cool! Too much to do during work, but hopefully I can get to it tonight.
No problem, no rush. I was off work today. Back to the grind tomorrow so I can't do much to help the rest of the week.
But maybe I could add a second bar under it with just 'Message Center' and 'Read New'.
This is one option, but i wonder if it might not look cluttered. Other options:
1) A bulleted list of links, essentially replicating the side bar, right underneath the button bar or under the "Post Message" box on the last page.
2) just three links in the actual footer in smallish font - Home, Read New, Message Center.
3) make the nav bar (and sidebar?) fixed in position, either using position:fixed or just by making the main area scrollable and sizing the whole page to viewport height. That way they would always be available for navigation even in the middle of a long page (like my 50-post ones).
Is this something worth polling about, or does it feel like dev judgment call? Pretty sure I could make PRs for any of them tonight.
For some reason I can’t explain (I think the hamburger menu), I am totally good with the location of the read new of iPhone, but on iPad it is making me a little nutty. It is so good on iPhone, I am with Jess, I might be able to give it up!
Gris, I'd be fine with any of your suggestions, but I simply cannot gather the energy to scroll up to the Read New button!
j/k of course. I have a slight preference for the link in footer option (unless by footer you mean the red bar on the bottom, i'd prefer a big button) Gud has done such an excellent job that I hesitate to ask him for more for a minor inconvenience.
