I visited the map and when I returned to Buffistas Home found myself logged out.

I had the opposite problem - when I went to the map page I was logged out.

Also, some of the people mentioned as being in the map I couldn't find (I was thinking specifically of Theodosia, since she's an area-ista).

I've done some more reading, and storing the locations as text is why the page is slow on loading. So there's that to be considered--swapping to latitude and longitude will speed things up, but be less user-friendly. It'll bring drag and drop back into play.

I found myself, but I wonder if you just put in the city & state you get the exact same spot on the map without any, which would explain why Theo isn't there but you can sort of see me (and why TomW isn't there, because they must have used slightly different wording on their location from mine, but probably the same one as each other).

It was really slow for me, but I figured that was just all of us on it at one time, I'll check later.

You can put in your street without a number for a little finer grain (or a cross street, even, for nearness with obfuscation).

Well, you can put any number of things in that location field, up to and including your zip code or latitude and longitude to varying precisions. If you have exactly the same position as someone else, I would only imagine it's first come first served, or last come first shown.

Feel free to experiment with positioning.

I'm going to see if I can convert the text entered on the profile page into latitude and longitude when it's saved, so that firing up the map page is faster. In the meanwhile, eh. It's not like we're taxing our system overly or anything--it's just a lot of back and forth to google.com. I'll trim the chatter one way or another.
