That seems like a phenomenon that arose in the 80's. In the 70's it was all pretty much rock music. There may have been soft, medium and hard rock, but it was all just rock music. In fact, in Spain we had an unofficial Christmas party one year where we (the 70s high school graduates) mocked ourselves by calling ourselves the "Forgotten" generation and played only 70s music. Really, other than Meat Loaf and Innagadadavida, who remembers anything from the 70s?

That's so interesting. Music was huge at my school, too, but it didn't really contribute to the divisions. And weirdest of all, *no one* in our town danced. It was like the town in Footloose except it was our own fault. I think we thought we were too cool to dance, or something. It was very strange.

Well maybe it didn't divide the kids so much as highlight the differences between cliques. The older we got, the more crossover there was, though, and contrary to popular mythology, I think it was easier for girls to crossover. I pretty much floated between the cliques.

I was very much the loner. I'm surprised I scored on punk/rebel... and stoner is a laugh.

I graduated with 91 other kids. The school was small enough that there wasn't a division between jocks and smart kids. A lot of the athletes (guys and girls) also took really advanced and/or AP classes.

There was a contraversy when we graduated and they put out the class rankings -- none of the grades were weighted, so it didn't matter if you took lots of AP classes and chemistry and whatnot. The girl who ranked fourth got really good grades and did really well, but didn't take any of the harder classes. A lot of the girls who took AP classes got really pissed off becuase she was ranked ahead of them, they bitched about how they worked so hard and challenged themselves and blah blah. I knew the girl they were mad at, she worked just as hard at her classes as they did and put in a lot of effort.

I thought they were really arrogant and obnoxious for acting like she'd cheated them out of their rightful place.

Some of the girls were ones I had wanted to be friends with at one point, they were alternative and arty and seemed really cool. I wanted to be part of their clique until I overheard them at one point call another girl a dyke and make "ewww icky! gross! disgusting" comments. After that I wasn't interested.

Which is pretty accurate for me. The only real laugh is the "Stoner" bit. My last semester of high school (this was at a boarding school in northern India) I was assigned the school's champion stoner as a room-mate. I suspect that the administration thought that a) I would be a good influence on him (Hah!), and b) I would narc on him if necessary. My classmates all knew I was going to a) let him be himself, and b) NOT narc on him. In the event, it took him only 10 days to get busted smoking hash behind the gym and sentenced to living with one of the senior teachers off-campus while his parents were contacted to arrange the details of his expulsion.
